Ok, I spoke to Mark at AF Rayspeed and he was telling me that an expansion chamber on a 185 Casa kit is probably not necessary and is effectively overkill. Even a 48mm Clubman is over the top. He recommended a 42mm Clubman with a 25mm Dellorto or the 26mm Jetex that they supply with their stage4 175 kits.

That does make a lot of sense. Personally I'm not keen on the Jetex, but that's just me. The 25mm Delly does seem to be a good upgrade with good improvements over a standard carb as they're more modern and efficient,Speedy.

Did a bit more digging over the weekend on this topic, and I had a chat with MBD today about their MB/BGM Clubman. Looks like a really well made piece of kit, with a good level of performance. £200 + price, so for that I'd expect it to be pretty good. Found a few opinions out there, but not many. Any thoughts on this one, anyone?

There are many opinions about the mb box....but for me it is just brilliant. For starters the build quality is top notch, the one thing it did need though was a clean off of the welding around the seam,no big hassles there, only 5 mins with a sanding wheel on grinder.i had mine ceramic coated so wanted the prep to be good. Next up was fitting it,we have all been there with box pies that don't line up with all the mounting points...but not with this, fitted first time, with everything just finger tight, the nipped everything up....then how well it works....well I fitted mine to 225 iron barrelled engine that previously had a 42 mm clubman on it,and it transformed it,was just like a totally different scooter,it found so much more power in all gears. I have seen people comment on how loud it is....for some reason mine wasn't that loud at all,no louder than the 42mm that it replaced.
Hope this helps,it is a lot of money ,but my opinion worth every penny!

Ok, thanks for the info. I've gone for it and bought one last night from Scootercenter Koln. As the pound is on a roll versus the Euro at the moment it was £30 cheaper to get it from there. Can't wait for it to arrive now. How much was the ceramic plating? I understand that it's quite expensive, but is it a durable finish?

Out of interest does the CASA have large inlet and exhaust ports I.e. Matched to 22mm type Jetex manifold and 42mm clubman?

Both ports look larger than on a standard 150/175 barrel. I'm not sure whether they're matched specifically to the Jetex/standard Dellorto carb and Clubman 42mm. They do look pretty close to the profile of both though...

Well, the MB Clubman arrived from Germany today. Looks very well made 8-) . Huge downpipe from the cylinder. I'd like to get it ceramic coated, but I'm struggling to get a price. My GP125 engine case also arrived and although dirty it's mint- every thread is absolutely perfect. Haven't seen one that good for a long time. I can feel another 'Ebay bitsa' thread coming on here as I don't yet have anything else apart from the nearly new Casa 185 kit and an unused BGM stator. Anyone got a GP125 frame? :D

did it come with ear plugs, i bought an early one with "near standard noise", what a dissappointment and my hearing isn't very good, it lasted 50 miles on my scoot, i went back to my "quiet" Sito Ancillotti

it was an early one, certainly very dissapointing noise wise, everyone was turning round to see what the hell was making all the racket!
if i'd known how loud it really was i'd not of bought it, another thing to add to the top shelf of scooter parts that don't do what they say they will  :(

Ah right. I've heard several people saying the Mk1's were louder than a loud thing. Apparently the Mk2 is supposed to be quieter, but hey ho, I wanted a louder pipe anyway :D

to be honest i only bought it in the first place cos the BGM catalog quoted "near standard noise" this blatantly was not true :(
if you want a loud pipe then you wont be dissappointed :D

Yeah, the noise seems to be an issue with many. I'll post up a vid on Youtube when I get it running in a bike. I bought a nice turquoise GP125 tonight from a certain auction site, so it won't be long before I pick it up and fit the exhaust. I'll report back with findings accordingly.

I've got a GP125 with Casa 185 kit and a noisy MB Clubman, running a Polini CP23 carb. Gearing is Italian GP125 with 19x46 primary.
It rides really well and feels really torquey. Starts second kick, every time. Cruises at a genuine 55-60, flat out about 65. The pipe was ceramic coated by Camcoat which cost about £120.

Unfortunately my exhaust didn't fit that easily and needed the tailpipe bending to align the rear mount. This of course was after the coating so a bit of touch-up was needed. I should have known better and fitted it before it was coated...

Yes, good point. I've learnt from bitter experience to dry build EVERYTHING that needs a lick of paint or plating. If you don't it's guaranteed not to fit .

If I may hijack momentarily- Pompeydave could you please tell me which issue of Scootering you are referring to? I may well have to find a copy to satisfy my curiosity as well..
Thanks

Pompeydave wrote:Did a bit more research into this last night and I found a 2011 copy of Scootering that had a 15 pipe Lammie test. Admittedly, it was based on a TS1 cylindered engine breathed upon by Taffspeed to 'road' tune spec, and fitted with Varitronic ignition and a 30mm PHBH Dellorto, but the comparison is still valid between the pipes.

What it showed was that the ADS-3 was the 'Torque king', developing most of it way down the rev range from about 4500 upwards, but tailing off rapidly above 7000. However, the AF Rayspeed NK 'Road' pipe has a wider spread of power, but the torque doesn't start coming in until about 5000, hence it's not quite as relaxed and grunty low down. However, it holds onto the power for longer than the ADS-3, with a gentle drop off all the way through to 8500.

The final figures for the above engine were:

ADS-3: PEAK POWER: 22.3HP (11th out of 15 in a range of 24.8 to 19.4hp) PEAK TORQUE: 21ft lbs @5474rpm (1st out of 15 in a range of 21ft lbs to 15ft lbs), PRICE: £250 +P&P

AF Rayspeed NK Road: PEAK POWER: 24.7hp (2nd out of 15 in the same range as above) PEAK TORQUE: 20ft lbs @6284rpm (2nd out 15 in the same range as above), PRICE: £217 +P&P

This has left me with a dilemma- do I go for the out and out torque king, the ADS-3, or the pipe that won the group test overall but has slightly less torque lower down, the NK Road?

I had mine ceramic coated by Camcoat in Warrington. I went for the Cermakrome coat which was about £90 + VAT.

It's certainly not a chrome finish, more like polished alloy.
