Fresco questions

I am in course of buying an under kickstart Fresco. It looks nice and straight and not badly pitted but it has been painted over in a red oxide.
What colours and finishes were they originally?
What purpose does the end cap serve too?

Mainly red or chrome. The cap on the end is to muffle it even more

I had a black one in the early 90s, the cap does quieten it down a bit and does allow you direct the plume of smoke sideways down or up as you like.

Does it dampen performance?
I recall the red ones. Not sure I could live with a red one though.
I thought the tailcan bit, even though it is not a separate part to the main body, may have been chrome but, sometimes, the memory plays tricks.

The early ones were mainly all red as for performance they were more show than go lol the end cap should be held in by a large cir clip the muffler should be packed with exhaust wading

The ones with the cap like that had a square bridge type thing with a threaded bolt welded to then baffle plate, which was indeed retained by a large circlip, and the cap is retained by a nut

That makes sense now. The one I had about 10 years back didn’t have that but was the same exhaust as this in all other ways.
It’ll be going on a very modestly powered engine, a Suzuki 190 conversion with either a 22 or 24 carburettor.

Picked it up tonight. Very good condition and clearly seen little use over the years. Sadly, it is missing the swan neck.
It’s given me some motivation to make a start on the engine.

If by swan neck you mean the part that bolts onto the casing and exhaust i think i might have one buried in my junk lambretta parts .

If you do and if you wish to part with it, that would be brilliant. Thanks.
