I met with a mate today (outside, natch) and he wants me to build him a new engine, but I want it to be as simple a build as possible.

He has a small block casing with GP crank (58 x 107) and Li125 gears. Everything else is up for grabs.

I want to avoid longer stroke cranks, add-on reed valves and any porting. I don’t want max-power, just more power than the 125cc he currently has.

So I am thinking of a kit between 185 to 198, 25mm Dell’orto carb breathing through the traditional air box, Scootopia 42mm clubman and Ant Tambs electrics.

So what small block kit for a plug and play build? Nicasil lining would be an advantage,but not essential.

I am thinking of these kit options:

Casa 185
Scootopia 185
Mugello 186
RT195
GT186

I have dismissed:

Quattrini 210
RB200

Any other kits that I have not considered?

Could do worse than a scootopia or casa kit
RT 195 are great - but not sure it’s worth the extra cash of your not doing the long stroke and bigger carb
A bit like paying for the best whore in town and asking for a cuddle

Having done a lot more research I have found that the Scootopia kit is excellent valued at £320. I can’t see any difference between this and the Casa kit, which is a good deal more money.

The problem is finding a shop with the Scoopotia kit in stock.

I've fitted 2 of these and they're nice quality. Piston crown wasn't quite level with bottom of exhaust port at bdc but that's all. Could be sorted with a 60 stroke crank but I know you don't want that. Also, it was only a little bit high. 1.5mm at a guess. I have the port timings written down somewhere with a 58/107.

I riding mate - bolted a casa one into an LI 150 with a 22mm scootopia carb, clubman and points- at times it made me wonder if the extra cash for a full RT set up was worth it.
It’s biggest downfall was when the small end went - it was as cheap to buy a new kit than repair it.

While the Casa 185 may be 'plug and play' the head, on both version 1 and 2, has a geometric compression of 10.8:1 with a 1.1mm squish clearance. I've heard from reliable sources that the Scootopia 185 head is the same. I know many people bolt these together but personally that ratio makes me a little nervous.

Also there is a recent batch of undersized rings going around for the Casa 185.

I’ve got a Scootopia kitted SX150 engine Team DSC lightly tuned with Gori exhaust, casatronic ignition, LI150 gearbox and 30mm VHSH carb. Built properly.
Only done a couple of hundred miles but I’ve got a crankcase induction motor to finish so the SX complete unit might be for sale.

It looks like the Scootopia 185 is out of stock across the country. The dealers I spoke to indicated that Scootopia have not got a restocking date.

I am erring towards the RT195 kit, as this is the same price as the Casa 185 and has the better exhaust flange, but I will try a few other dealers to see if the Casa kit can be found a bit cheaper. I might try RLC first. They seem to have it for £360, which is good compared to the £420 in this country (though the shipping will need to be added).

I've just bought a gori sport 200 kit from stf lambretta for £270 delivered with a 20 euro discount.

Or just buy the complete engine off me for far cheaper than it will cost to build one from scratch
