Wassel testing

Is there any way to test the wassel regulators? The 2 wires from the stator power a headlight bulb if I connect it to them but when I wire the system up the lights will not work without the battery connected even if I wire a capacitor into the system instead of the battery.

That does sound like the Wassel is feked, you don't need a battery or capacitor to make the lights work. Check and double check all you connectors though, that includes any fuses in the circuit as it is quite possible that a badly crimped connector or slightly corroded fuse connection is causing your problem. Last night I was tracing a fault on my recently installed HID headlamp which I thought was a duff ignition switch but which turned out to be a tiny bit of corrosion on the blade of the fuse to the battery. That also explains an intermittent charging fault I've had for the last year

First call for me would be to use a multimeter to test if you have a dc output from the Wassell, that would tell you if it was faulty straight away.
Set the multimeter to dc voltage setting and test across the red and black with the engine running. It should read around 12-14V with a few revs on.

Thanks guys, will give it a go next time I can get to the garage. Stuck in saudi at the moment thinking of problems and how to fix them when I can.
