fuel octane levels

If im right in thinking that higher octane fuel helps prevent pre ignition why are many folk still running normal unleaded on tuned kits/motors. I realise there are things on the market to alter the ignition timing which helps but is it not advisable to also use the higher octane fuel when available aswell ??

Not necessarily. Higher octane fuel such as Super Unleaded won't make a great deal of difference in a standard'ish engine. You'd be just as well using a regular grade and keeping it fresh.

Ok but would you recommend using it with an imola kitted motor (which i have) and also a tuned TS1 which i am about to start building shortly ?

I would use any old shite in a standard motor but I always use super unleaded in my engines and have done for many years.

And a wee splash of this every now and again to counter the effects of ethanol. 8-) G.

When I Bought a bike a while back it came with a gallon of methanol, the previous owner recons a shot in the tank counteracts the effects of ethanol.

Who knows,

Methanol is an alternative fuel for internal combustion and other engines, either in combination with gasoline or directly ("neat"). It is used in racing cars in many countries. In the U.S., methanol fuel has received less attention than ethanol fuel as an alternative to petroleum-based fuels, because in the 2000s particularly, the support of corn-based ethanol offered certain political advantages.[1] In general, ethanol is less toxic and has higher energy density, although methanol is less expensive to produce sustainably and is a less expensive way to reduce the carbon footprint. However, for optimizing engine performance, fuel availability, toxicity and political advantage, a blend of ethanol, methanol and petroleum is likely to be preferable to using any of these individual substances alone[citation needed]. Methanol may be made from hydrocarbon or renewable resources, in particular natural gas and biomass respectively. It can also be synthesized from CO2 (carbon dioxide) and hydrogen.[2]

When I used to run Denmark loads out of Immingham, there was a girl on the bar in the pub on the docks who used to drink Sea-men-foam and she wasn't bald, so I'd say yes!
