Exhaust woes?

Hi all, i've just a few days back lost the tail can from my exhaust, when i was away on the scoot last week i noticed some small side to side movement on the muffler but all bolts and rivets well intact, when the muffler broke away the part that joins the steel stub was still on and the break was through the perforated stinger towards the bottom of the muffler where i guess i was getting the movement from originally, my question is when i made it home the exhaust casing bracket had also broke and the exhaust is possibly only still hanging on to the barrel, so would riding about 150 miles with no muffler put extra vibration on the whole exhaust causing this or do i need to look elsewhere? thanx Lammer205

It would help if you mentioned which exhaust as there are differences. I have ad a Franspeed end can break exactly as you describe, just at the point where the holes in the inner pipe start. That was a newish exhaust that had done maybe 200 miles on my Avanti and lasted only 5 miles on my TS1. I bought a new one which has been fine for 2k miles so far with no issues. My theory is that the end can needs to be under compression slightly when assembled and the 3 nuts tightened otherwise, the weight of the can will put stress on the weakest point which is the first holes in the pipe. Production variations possibly?
I had no issues with the main sharks fin bracket but I would imagine that in your case that maybe broke first and the added movement caused the end can to break.

Hi Coaster, yeah the pipe is a Franspeed and has been on the scooter for a few years now, the break is one thing and sounds to have broke where yours has broke , but for me it's trying to determine if the loss of the muffler contributed to the casing bracket breaking at the rear also the loss of the two m8 bolts through excess vibration caused by riding that distance with no muffler? cheers Lammer205

Imho it will be the loss of the main case bolts and breaking of bracket that prompted the end can failure not the other way round. I daresay those miles without the end can were travelled at a lower speed than normal?.......or are your ears still bleeding

Hi Coaster, what your saying makes sense ,but I will have a look over the scoot at the weekend ,as I said earlier I think the stinger had cracked inside and that gave me the small left to right movement on the tailcan this was picked up when I was changing a tyre, but the rest of the pipe mountings seemed solid at that point. As for my ears even with ear plugs in and a decent noise reducing lid yeah still bleeding, sounded like an old baffeless pitone!cheers Lammer205
