Possible electronic for std 4 pole setup ???

I saw a post on the Scooterotica forum and was thinking there must be others that would like to do similar but without buying a complete electronic kit.

"I want to loose the points on my series one, but would like to keep the 6volt lighting system."

Then I think it's very possible to do using the original four pole flywheel and stator with the addition of a CDI from a variatronic.

The four pole flywheel as standard uses all or most of one laminate wound core to creat a spark for the points, that one coil could be rewound with the correct diameter enamel coated wire to the same impedance as a variatronic stator and as there is no pickup on the Variatronic then there is no extra work needed.

The other original lighting coil is left untouched, the rewound coil could if needed have a second winding sharing the same coil if needed, i think some early stators used the earth side of the ignition through the brake switch to earth through the brake light, this is on single wire brake light switches as fitted to very early series 3 and earlier.

I guess this could be a cheapish electronic conversion where originality is what's needed most, that's if my thinking of how to go about it is correct.

Just sharing my thoughts. ;)

How is the spark triggered on a Varitronic?

It's directly fed from the lt coil without a trigger, it doesn't need one as it fires on one of the poles in the flywheel, it's feeding on an AC feed, then the internal diodes in the CDI only lets current flow one way so it can only fire on two of the four poles as it blocks the other two poles, it uses one pulse at or just before TDC, and the second pulse as the same polarity magnet crosses at or just before BDC.

I think it's probably a very do-able conversion.

Then that does sound like it could be done but you would still be faced with a flywheel that is not without fan and dowel issues, and a weak taper that will always limit performance options.

Perhaps not quite the step forward that I initially thought.

not everyone wants to go faster, some just want their scooters to go ;)

^... having first-hand experience of standard bikes failing because of standard 4-pole flywheel assemblies coming apart and leaving me stranded on the side of the road, this wasn't simply a comment about reliability for uprated motors. Indeed, there was another recent thread on here or the LCGB forum about fixing a failed 4-pole flywheel too, which makes me question whether it is worth the effort, rather than changing to a more reliable system.

"some just want their scooters to go"... 4-pole systems on standard machines have too frequently failed over time.

I do see the benefit of doing this is you are also going to address the 'fan shearing' issues with these flywheels... and not overstress the weak taper of the crank, however, just getting the ignition to work as an electronic 6V is only part of the battle.
