BGM Front Sprocket Recall Jan 16

Is anyone else reading Feb's issue of Scootering mag. Page 6 BGM Front Sprocket Recall? It looks like unless the tooth number shown has an A B or C after the 19 20 etc (i.e 19A) then the sprocket has been insufficiently hardened and a replacement is being issued... I'm pretty sick in the stomach only yesterday finishing my total rebuild of a 1966 LiS to learn it looks like it's gonna have to come apart... If this is the case who's going to pay?

It is a big nuisance but at least the manufacturer is doing the right thing by issuing a recall. Not all dealers do that willingly if at all. At least it didn't fail in service. BGM's stuff is generally good quality.

Perhaps they should recall their stators as well. Two of the three I've had have fallen apart. And I know of plenty of others where the rivets have let go.
The 'high end' lightened Italian deep crown wheels from CLW are crap too.

And their regulators (3 out of 3 have failed that I know of) ,
Mind you they did also recall those cdi's a few years ago that looked like if if coils... None of those worked at all!!

Why would you spend more money on a 'fancy' bgm one when you can get a sil one anyway??!

I'm a big user of genuine SIL parts in all my engines.
I've just bought a genuine front and back sprocket from SR (along with a GP gearbox) and it's perfectly fit for purpose and all parts at decent price. Agree with nobby can't see the point of the so called hi end version of a front sprocket.

I do recognise and acknowledge that there is some s"#t unknown brands out there but you steer clear.

Update - A couple of emails exchanged with Philipp at Scooter Center and the exchange for a replacement is all arranged. Excellent service.

Thank you.

Adam

PS - Contact made via the email address given in Scootering... so well done to Scootering too :D

A good mate of mine had one of these fail on the way back from Austria last year, fitting it before he set off after reading all the hype about them being the 'best ever'.

Good job we took the SIL front sprocket that he had in his engine for 10+ years, as a spare. Of course, not a 5 minute job to take the side casing off and replace a front sprocket at the side of a busy road in the middle of Germany.

Really couldn't agree more with Gaz, as you hear more and more about this occurring with particular brands of upmarket products it becomes a question for those doing many miles each year that tried and tested genuine SIL parts do the job and don't cost the earth.

OK, still a pain to have to swap them out (2 sprockets in 2 motors) but my replacement sprockets have arrived from Germany without any fuss, which is still very good service, rather than having to fight 'tooth and nail' to get an exchange.

Good the hear Adam, lets hope this type of customer service rubs off on UK dealers, some of whom have been rather lacking in this department.

I've always found Scooter Center a pleasure to deal with, never any fuss when there's a problem, haven't even had to return a part before when the sent the wrong part for them to send me the correct one. Delivery is pretty quick as well, often quicker than many UK dealers and cheaper!

Glad I kept my BGM knackered sprocket then, 458 miles and its wrecked, as other people have stated to many BGM parts fail, no ones mentioned their cranks yet, I assume no ones had not had failiurs in that respect yet then ? Ill contact scooter center on Monday and get a replacment and run a file across it this time before fitting just to be sure :D
