17 is a compromise setting for static ignition given current fuels. Surely with the Augusto on you'd want to set something like 23 degrees with the Augusto?
On the 6000 it will retard about 6 degrees at 6000rpm on the 8000 it goes about the same amount but at 8000 rpm, but both will continue to retarding further if your engine revs on.
Ideally you want your best retardation near to peak power so if you have a fairly standard motor you'd want the 6 or on a tuned engine the 7 or 8.
If yours is set to 17 now that must mean it's retarding to 11 degrees at 6k rpm that's much too late.

sorry I didnt make myself clear. Its at 17 when revved to about 6000.But its a tuned race motor thatll rev to 9500 .Advised to get agusto 8000 to get more revs, its flat in high revs at the moment.

Makes sense, I think with the 8000 it's the same amount of retardation it just comes in later. Actual information is fairly scant.
Fit it and check it with a strobe

It would seem reasonable to ask the 'manufacturer', but I’ve just realised who that is.
I take my stupid suggestion back…..

At what RPM do you cruise for long periods. You won't be holding at your highest rpm for more than short bursts I am assuming. I set my 6000 so that I would feel 100% comfortable when holding it at somewhere between 5500 and 6000 for long periods. Watched it on the strobe and my tacho.
I would need to feel "comfortable" that my 8000 was not overly advanced at my cruising rpm if you get my drift.

I'm not sure he'd be doing much "cruising" with a race tuned motor - I could be wrong though..
