I got a power spark one off eBay for about 15£ you need a battery to run it but worked fine on mine.

I use one of these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AccuSpark-H80 ... Swkl5XcoDmNeeds a 12V battery, but gives a bright light and is well made. And cheap. The pick up lead is plenty long enough to clip on the HT lead and allow you to point the gun at the flywheel.

Be mindful that the pick up may be directional and have printed on it something like "spark plug this side".

I'd be surprised if you can get a consistant reading with a lightened flywheel because the engine won't have its usual dampening effect of the heavier ,'normal' weight flywheel.
I've recently bought a Gunstons tachostrobe like this one but I've yet to try it out so afraid I can't recommend it

I bought the Accuspark strobe on Ebay as well. I stood the scooter in front of my car and put the supply leads on the car battery. I was surprised how much difference there is on timing between static and strobe timing.
