Avanti 225 or Mugello 225?

Hi all, I have a question for a friend who's in a bit of a muddle. He is just having a super Monza finished off for his gp that previously had a RB22 motor in it. He was going to put the RB in the SX he has bought, but feels it wrong to cut the battery tray and as it is a bit of a supertune 60's looking bike . He is now thinking of a piston port motor and as Rapidos aren't currently available, then it looks like either Rons Avanti or the long established Mugello. I have to be honest and say I haven't had any of these kits, so cannot advise him. Basically his intention is for it to be used for distance work in a group of other scoots, predominantly for the euro next year aswell as his mrs using it when he is on the super Monza. What would be his best option,if there is one, cheers, Speedy. :D

There were 3 Avanti's in our group that travelled to Davos and back this year and all 3 coped with the distance with ease......mind you, so did the GT186, Ts1225 and a 225 Mugello :? Personally I'd go for the Avanti, the extra fin area and resulting improved cooling wins it for me everytime.

Out of those 2 I would go for the Avanti but what about the GT large block kit?

Based on the performance of the GT186 in our group I'd say it would be a serious contender 8-)

I have an Avanti and would certainly recommend it. In fact the performance has so impressed friends that 2 have since bought them.....and are very impressed (ex-TS1 and Rapido riders). A fourth Vespa rider will be joining our "Avanti Crew" at the end of the year.

Saying that there doesn't seem to be any bad reports about Mugello, but has as been said the large cooling area of the Avanti is the deal breaker for me.

Thankyou folks. He doesn't want a GT as he is worried about the iron cylinder, having said that, I am buying one later this year for my other GP. So I have told him to go for the Avanti now based on what has been said, cheers,Speedy.

What are his concerns about the iron barrel on the GT kit? Run in period is quick, a minimum of 250 miles which is much less that the Avanti, you can run it on lawnmower 2 stroke oil and if you did happen to heat seize then you can hone the barrel rather than having to get it re-lined :)

Peoples misconceptions about iron barrels makes me laugh. Iron barrels are bullet proof compared to ali barrels.

Yes they are,but the only reason a cylinder will fail,is because something other than it,has caused the problem.Cylinders dont fail, pistons do.

To be honest, the same as many folk have over the years I surpose whether it is founded or not. Another thing is I think he fancies a piston port kit as he's had ts1, rb22 and now super Monza. I f I were able to persuade him to buy the gt kit, then he would have it done before I get mine, so I canna have that :D

i have a avanti engine being built at the moment so i cannot comment on the performance, but the quality looks great and i think you get alot for your money ie all the studs, gaskets, and cowling! i dont think the GT 200 kits cast barrel would put me off, it seams very forgiving can be holed to a 230 so i believe ? and from what edan has reported on facebook its giving some great fuel returns too!

It is economical in its current configuration.

Did 65 miles before filling up at the weekend while at the wssc rally and only put 6.7 litres in to fill it back up.

thats about 44 mpg while two up with luggage.

Out of the two straight from the box untouched & bolted on, I think I would prefer the Avanti 8-)

Did many miles about 30k, on a 225 Mugello and had no real problems, it was tune by Charlie and after 7 years I decided to try something different.

I have given the kit to a friend to use.

I had to choose recently and chose Avanti 225. Extra fin area did it for me, they're cool. Nearly built and can't wait to try it out. Ron is very helpful and the kit oozes design, thought and quality. Easy for me to build, even the rings are pre-gapped!
