Dial gauge and bracket source?

Any recommendations where to buy a dial gauge and bracket for setting TDC and measuring timing? I have seen the brackets online in SR and MB that attach across two head studs, but wondered if there were any other types and where to buy?

I must admit to have simply modified an old spark plug which has a concentric collar on top with a grub screw either through the spark plug hole (on central plug engines) or a piece of RSA (Rolled Steel Angle) to hold the DTI with the head off.

It never occurred to me to buy an appropriate tool or to consider the likely cost as....I own Lambrettas, which is cost enough

Likewise, my DTI’s came from Car Boot Sales or similar. The best DTI’s have a lug on the back to attach to a piece of RSA.

I agree with your way, using I dial gauge you may need to allow for the dwell at TDC.

MB out of stock but Brolam list them at £40 for the kit. Elongated holes so fits large and small blocks.

Many thanks for the ideas and offers. I think I am going to have a go at making my own with an old imperial 0.0005" DTI I acquired and some odd bits of angle I have lying around. Shouldn't cost more that the market rate of £15, even if I damage a few drill bits and a hacksaw blade along the way.

I used one of these off ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/0-01mm-Clock- ... SwHjNV-kWI at less than 11 quid, plus a bit of metal bent to shape, drilled two holes, job done
