gearbox advice

Whilst i appreciate that the setup i have for my needs may not be the ebst im running with what ive got.
advice please, got a rb225 in at the moment running a franspeed supertourer engine struggles at times on hill etc im a big lad (17st) and realise that being an rb needs to be revved quite high to get it in the pwoerband but wondered would a change of gearbox help, mainly used for rallies, running round local tend not to thrash it round too much. has a 35mm mikuni 46 tooth af clutch with 19 front sprocket and gp200 gearbox, wonderd if a li150/ tv200 would be better or what would you recommend or is it best left as per af spec sheet( apart from supertourer) adn just ride it harder or is there anyway to tweak my setup better for me. its fine when running round but sometimes hills kill it and constantlky dropping it down to get the revs back up then woooosh it flies, any info or suggestions gratefully recieved

Which may also include the need of a 47-tooth cassette AF crownwheel buying to get your gearing correct??
Try changing ya front sprocket to 18 tooth
Depending on your chain you may need use a pull down tensioner likes?

Using 18x46 will give you a final drive = 5.1

That should be ideal for you? A mate is similar weight as you?
ALAS he uses An LI-150 gearbox on his RB but he adjusted his to a final drive = 5
& he loves it recons pulls great uphill & in wind no bother

the gearbox you have has a pretty small jump between 3rd and 4th so as suggested your final drive ratio could be altered to allow the bike to rev a bit more and to pull better in top when you have a hill or headwind, i would try an 18 front and see if you like it, its often trial and error to get the ratio that suits your combination best.

going to try the 18 sprocket and go from there seen some li150 gearboxes as well so poss do both at same time would my chain tensioner drop it down enough or would i need an 81 chain, got a iswis 82 fitted at moment

82 chain with pull down tensioner will be fine using 18x46 setup m8

If you change to an li150 box then you'll need to change your sprockets again, which is just introducing more problems, cost and unnecessary work. You current gearbox is fine and changing to an 18 tooth front sprocket will be a step in the right direction so do that first and then take stock of how it performs.

tempted to try and clean the clutch up as well, af 6 plate is really stiff compared to others just fitted new mb cables and inners but stiff pretty stiff doesn't help breaking my wrist on wway to isle of white last year but still think its stiff, read that you can clean up the drive sprocket casing slightly and slides better , is that true

Coming down to an 18 front sprocket might help. But, if you changed to a 47 rear, as has been suggested, then you wouldn't need to look at an LI gearbox.

You've got something wrong there mate........ An AF cassette clutch has perfect feel if all is set up right especially if you use a Yamaha clutch lever to gain a better leverage ratio.

going to check the clutch over when strip to fit the sprocket which turned up today as thought it would be easier tbh

I'd look at 18 x 47 giving 5.2, you can buy just a crownwheel for the AF clutch. If you take it apart clean up the steels while you're in there, I found lots of burrs on mine. Did that before fitting it so it's always been an easy action.

put an 18 front sprocket in adn then got carried away.always struggled with he af 6 plate clutch and stripped it down cleaned any burrs etc then got hold of a chris sadd hydraulic conversion case so my question is dont like the handlebar res adn master cylinder thats come with it can i fir the oiltek hidden remote res and run it to that any thoughts and advice please thanks

solved one problem prat that built the engine had stuck an li clutch to plate in with the nippple, ground that off and re tried adn feels so much better

well justa quick thanks the 18 tooth made a huge difference feels like a diff scooter rode loads better just been to skegvegas this weekend and was a joy to ride took the hills better etc, just need to fit my hydraulic clutch now adn then sorted..

^... well done for making the change, rather assuming that it was an issue with any of the components (kit, pipe, carb, etc.). So many people are only a couple of setup changes away from having their ideal motor and it is a real shame that some people never realise the potential.
