Cylinder head washers

Does everyone use wavy or spring washers on the cylinder head ?Mine came loose,I think because I used too much silicone,but I cant remember there ever being spring washers ever being there.The motor was built professionally several years ago.In Stickys book in the upgraded motor build it says MB use flat washers.

I use slightly dished flat washers with serations. They are used, or were used on Claas farm machinery and make excellent locking washers. I would not use the normal split spring washers but wavey ones might work. BGM recomend thicker flat washers and extended nuts but you also need thier longer studs.

Hi tractorman just wondered why normal split spring washers arent recomended (ive read this before). If im honest ive used them in past on more than one occasion when didnt have any decent wavey washers and never had any problems. Thanks. Baz

They cut into the head if you don't use flats with them.

That's what they're designed to do! That's how they lock the nut and that's why you shouldn't use a plain washer under them, it defeats the purpose.
It doesn't matter if the cylinder head is dented, it secures the nut more effectively.
