Bogging down.

Postby gp200ts1 » Tue May 02, 2017 6:09 am

Avanti 225 with Ron moss pipe and 30mm phbh. Started playing up on the way to Weston. Every now and again it started bogging down, if I pulled the clutch and revved it then dropped down a gear it cleared and off it went again. Put it down to the choke coming on because the elbow wasn't sitting right. Adjusted it and it improved but still bogged now and again. In the end I disconnected it but it still bogged down now and again. Any ideas what else I can check?

That happened to 3 of us doing The SDR . I think it's fuel or the additives they're putting in it , to much ethanol .

Don't think it's the fuel itself, used different garages from supermarkets to motorway services. Filled up same as the rest of the lads no they had no problems

Carb strip and inspect everything especially the atomiser and needle and the float valve.

Check the floats within the carb. I had similar problem and went through 3 30mm PHBH Delly floats. If that's the problem you will see one or both of the round floats (normally white and translucent) part filled with petrol stopping the needle valve from shutting down and flooding the cylinder.

I found loads of issues pulling away or when I was slowing down towards the lights..

Are you using a filter on the carb?

Yes it's got a breathe sweet filter. First thing I did after the choke was clean the filter.

How many miles has the kit done ? It's recommended to change the rings after 5000 miles.

have you tried it without the filter ?

I cleaned my low rev's up by fitting an advance/retard unit (Mtech)

It had the rings changed 2000 miles ago, it's coming up on 6000 miles in total. Always run on the spec that it is and never any trouble with it apart from now

My Avanti started running rough and became very boggy which on strip down was found to be due to the ceramic plating having worn through in a few places. I was also at around 6k miles and had changed the rings a 1 or 2k earlier. I took it to Ron who was of the opinion that I hadn't set the gap properly  Funnily enough the compression read ok ish on a compression tester :? I had it replated but it sat on the shelf for a while as I'd put my TS1 motor in the scooter as a temporary measure and was enjoying the clean running of a reed valve set up. The Avanti is back up and running now but with a reed valve fitted and is an absolute delight to ride 8-)

New needle jet and needle in mine as the needle had enlarged the hole in The atomiser , cured .!
I did fit a new needle on the SDR but never had a new atomiser with me . Will do in the future
