It's rare to hear of chains breaking these days but a poor quality one will stretch much quicker than a top quality one which will lead to slop in the drive train.

Question... do chains really "stretch" or do they just wear?

0.05mm of wear on either side each link would mean up to 8mm extra length over 80 links which could make it fairly loose, it's not much on each link but multiplied up ...

It was either too big in the first place or it's excessively worn, not stretched.

The most 'used' chain I've ever seen.
It was a standard Regina Extra with 80 links :shock: on a 15x46 setup.
The chain tensioner was also broken.
