Fuel tank crud

Can anyone please advise the best way to clean a fuel tank, scoot has been sat for a long time unused...when I fuelled it the crud contaminated the carb etc

Can you describe the crud? Is it rust?

I have used a POR15 kit to clean out and rust seal several tanks successfully, just search Frosts POR15 and it will come up.

I use the WT no1 method.First undo and discard the petrol tap.Next with a finger over hole fill the tank with petroil,shake and let the petroil out. run through cheesecloth(or some other filter)until its clear of the rust.Repeat until the petroil runs clear.

A handful of two of pea-shingle will help shift any loose rust too

Good old vinegar and some large nuts bolts .
Give good shake up leave for a day then shake then rest on other side repeat until all sides of tank look clear .
Be fore each shake and rotate drain out vinegar through gauze or paint filters .
About 3 ltrs should do.
Once looking clean blast the insides with a jet wash,hold your foot or it will skid across the floor
Look inside with torch to see how clean it is.
Important to dry out the inside with either compressed air or a hot air gun,any trace of fuel should be long gone.
If you have a cement mixer wrap the tank on the wifes best coat and put in the mixer for a while

Thank you for all your help, I removed the tank today, it is in a very bad way, I like the POR 15 suggestion....as the scooter will be stored...the fuel tap is goosed also...

It may be worthwhile looking for a S/H one if it is too bad, you can pick them up reasonably priced as quite a few people change to Long range tanks , Just an option

I have used oxalic acid 1:3 ratio.
left 24 hrs flush with water and bicarb of soda to nutralize acid flush again with water and dry quickly with a heat gun or hairdryer. fantastic result and once filled with petroil wont rust again.
I think I saw this on line somewhere by sticky.
I did try it out on a rusty bolt to see what the result was first.
failing that I have seen tanks soda blasted with great results too.

To be honest, for all the faffing about you'll have to do you would be better off with a new one.

Failing that parts fairs are usually good for picking up a tank cheap.

Or... the wifes coat, wrapping the tank with a couple of her bra's and then into the tumble dryer with a fist full of old nuts and bolts inside. She'll not know if ya do it when she's out.
POR15 works well, but if its in a bad way and is likely to be porous, then a new tank is best. POR15 ain't cheap anyway.
