Stainless Dome Nuts bit onto Spindle

Postby Granty » Sun Oct 12, 2025 9:41 am

Morning -- thought i had an easy job of changing front tyre -- not to be. The SS dome nut had bit into the front hub spindle and would not move, (outboard disc side) so i could not get locating washer out to drop the front wheel. I had to cut the nut in half to then turn it to get it off and new set up ordered. What (if any) copper grease etc is advised to dab onto spindle threads to ensure done nuts stay tight on fork links but guard against the SS biting into the milder steel spindle? - Thanks G.

It's called 'galling'. Stainless steel cold welds under pressure. The bigger the nut, the grater the torque, so a bigger likelihood of galling.

Blue goop is the best stuff I know for stopping this, but copperslip does help, as does any grease. But blue goop is specifically for this purpose.
