Running a suzuki 190 kit on a 22mm carb

Postby Scooterslag » Mon Dec 07, 2015 12:12 pm

Just picked one off a friend for a decent price and don't want a mad carb/pipe combination, I know people will go why bother? but I'm only after a bit more torque and speed and want to keep things simple. I've been looking at some of the US lammy forums and a few people run either their deanspeed kit or Suzuki 190 with a standard 22mm carb but what would be a good jetting start point? cheers Paul

Jet it same as a 200 main jet usually between 118-125, if it bogs down at low speeds try a 150 slide, if the idle won't settle coming off the throttle try a 48 pilot jet.
There all a little different depending on porting and cylinder head, most seem to run skimmed and reprofiled high comp 150 heads. The 175 head gives a more useable compression ratio when skimmed and reprofiled.

Ive actually got two 190 barrels that I need to port ASAP. I've only just got the cylinder heads back after getting them skimmed and reprofiled ones is from a 150 the other ones a 175 head.
I will try and upload a couple of pics to show the difference.

Cheers, Mark.

Thanks Mark, will be interesting to see the differences in Barrel's, I know the 190 is ported for more topend speed but I'm looking for just a usable increase of torque and a bit more speed rather than a flat out racer, kind of similar to what people get with a Casa 185 though I know they are very different kits in terms of porting etc, cheers Paul :)

with the 190 Suzuki conversions- do you need a packer if your using a standard conrod and the barrel's been top and tailed or just with a longer rod? mine has been top and tailed but didn't come with any packer so not sure if it had one before or wasn't fitted with it, cheers Paul

If it's topped and tailed it's usually for a 107 rod without packers. Just check the piston to the barrels top position when you put it together. Some have been shortened less for 110 rods and 60mm stroke cranks.

Thanks again for the reply Mark, a few piccies of the beast compared to a standard GP150 barrel and piston

That looks well ported and quite a large inlet port on the shortened barrel, is there a tuners name on the barrel?

I am resurrecting this thread as I am thinking along these lines for an engine build. It'll be a long term build but I am thinking about it now as I'm getting a crank made up this week to use with it (Indian GP 200 webs and Yamaha 115 conrod).

I have a couple of Italian barrels to use (GP150 and SX150). Will someone with real life experience reassure me that they can be bored to 64mm without becoming badly susceptible to regular seizing?

Some ten years ago, I rebuilt up a kit of bits for a guy on a limited budget into his engine comprising a Suzuki 185 piston. He supplied all of the 'Old Skool' stuff that went toward the build, including the (even then!) outdated Amal Mk II.

He collected it literally just before it would be run down to an IOM rally, pillion with luggage.

The only 'set-up' that it had was by my 'seat-of-the-pants' dyno equivalent. Hah!

I stated my concerns to him, that it should be 'nursed' until it got bedded in & that the jetting was my best guesstimate.....Inevitably, it got caned there & back.

When I next saw him, I asked how it went.

He shook my hand & thanked me, said the engine was brilliant & had not missed a beat.

More a testament to the Suzuki piston than me, I think

False start. The GP200 crank I had ready for this has the wrong pin size

Is it an 18mm pin, you could use one of the conversion little end bearings that granturismo sell to allow the use of the Suzuki piston .

It was the crankpin. Looks like there are two sizes 22.0 and 22.8. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew this.

It sounds like you have the old standard Ø22.9 mm holes in your webs.

Well, if you look on AF Rayspeed's website you'll see that they sell a stepped pin to allow the 'older' webs to be used with the con rods that require a Ø22 mm diameter to function.

At only £13.26 RRP, I'm almost glad that I'm not on commission

If you use AF 22.9 / 22 pin make sure you ask them for the appropriate big end bearing as not all bearings fit over the outer (22.9) part of the pin

Thanks for the input, lads. My gut feel is to seek out Indian GP webs which will take a good quality 20mm crankpin and bearing. I'm in no rush.

Yes I've just measured the piston I took out of my 190 and it's the same, mine has has the skirt shortened as my barrel is topped and tailed, I've got it running just a bit of fine tuning with the jetting, but pulls quite well with an expansion exhaust fitted, mitaka pistons are very good by the way, I've got them in my lammy 350. :D

Thanks. Yes, I have used Mitaka and Aoki Taiwanese pistons in my GT186.
