Postby Simon_T » Sun Aug 07, 2016 10:44 pm

Hi all,
Ive finally got to the point were its running.

198 mugello
JL 1 exhaust
28 mm dellorto
jets
122 main
55 pilot
70 choke
268 atomiser x7 needle top clip.
45 slide
2 turns out.
manual choke for now

ok here goes.
needs choke to start even when hot,and don't idle to well have to rev it.
any views or ideas welcome.
thanks in advance.
it runs fine in most gears maybe a little boggy but can only achieve maximum 55 to 57 miles per hours and it don't rev on any further.

Imo your pilot is a tad too big, try maybe a 53 or 52. If you are on an AV268 on top clip and it is boggy then maybe try an AV266 on 3rd clip and maybe move up to 2nd clip. Lastly make sure you have at least a 300 float valve in (200 is as they come st'd) so there is plenty of flow at high speeds.

These are only recommendations and DO NOT try jetting in your carb' without doing plug chops at different throttle positions to ensure your plug colour does not look weak!!!

Hi Rich,
Thanks for your input do you recommend i change the needle to x13 or leave it x7 with a 266 atomiser i think i read some place they both work well with a 266.

Both needles work well with AV266, I tried X13 but was too boggy in mid range so dropped to X7.

Thanks Toddy ,Rich Steve,

Just took her out after running with the following and it was totally flat all the way through the range.

122 main
45 slide
53 pilot
266 atomiser
x7 needle 3rd clip down was better than 2nd clip down
open carb

checked plug and it was lean

Ran better with the above however i may put the 268 atomiser back in and try it with just the pilot change.

or i may try yours toddy.

That all depends on what throttle position those pics were at. Different adjustments are needed depending on that.

Ideally you'd need to do plug checks at 4 settings minimum, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full throttle. Stick a bit of masking tape on your switch housing and wrap some masking tape around the throttle grip adjacent to the bit on the switch housing. Put a mark on the switch housing and a mark on the throttle grip with throttle off, then turn throttle to wide open and put a mark for full throttle, from there it's easy to work out the marking for 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 settings. The idea of a plug check is to be able to take a [virtual] photograph of the plug at an exact point in time. You need to ride at set throttle position for at least 1/2 mile and to get your virtual photograph you need to switch off the ignition [or hit the kill switch] and immediately pull in the throttle and coast to a halt [don't pull in clutch before switching off engine or revs will rise]. Ideally find somewhere with lay-byes that you can coast into. Then remove plug and check colour, worth doing it a few times at each setting to be certain you've given it enough time to build up plug colour. Doing a few checks at each throttle position might take a couple of hours but that's time well spent if it saves you a holed piston down the line.

Can't praise this tool highly enough, when used with a 13mm ratchet spanner, to make removing spark plug quick and easy and saving you getting burnt fingers.
