The length of installed Helicoils is based upon the diameter ‘D’

Therefore an M8 x 1.25 x 2D has an installed length of 2 x D = 16 mm

The subject of cylinder studs was recently discussed on this Forum, specifically ways in which the strength of the stud/hole relationship may best be optimised.

Thread inserts.JPG

Lambretta cylinder studs are M8 ‘course’ which is Metric Ø8 mm with a thread pitch of 1.25 mm

Although Helicoil (wire thread inserts) are used extensively to repair stripped threads, the main use is for their installation during the manufacturing process by many manufacturers. Think Rolls-Royce, Boeing etc.

Fitted correctly, they are a superb product that increase the strength of the resultant thread, were it to be left as, say, aluminium alloy.

Any thread repair should be carried out with due thought to the remaining material left around the insert & the likelihood that there may be need for subsequent repairs.

Personally, I have the resources for Helicoiling & Keensert repairs.

However, for reasons explained, I would use Helicoils in the first instance ;)

Thanks for replying l know there will be a load of ways to do the repair but what l was trying to find out was one that been proven on barrel studs. Im going with helicoils and have found someone who does it for a living and has for the last 20 plus years. The threads arnt stripped just sloppy so hopefully l wont be following this thread up with a how do you repair helicoils. Thanks again
