Fuel Taps

Postby Strummer10 » Mon May 08, 2017 8:21 pm

I have a tank and a half fitted (ie; takes up the gap where the AIRBOX normally goes plus the usual tank. I have problems with the conventional fuel tap as its too tight to get onto the tank thread and is too close to it. Is there another tap out there that sits higher up and clears the engine mount more easily ?

Thanks

CamLam do a rear exit petrol tap which may help. I have also, in similar circumstances before, put strips of lino or rubber between the tank rubbers and tank to raise it slightly.

Scootopia sell a fast flow tap that has a similar, small profile to OEM taps, though Storkfoot's suggestion may also give you the clearance you need.

Before the advent of either type, I've carefully 'ported' older taps that I have & even shortened the threaded portion to allow them to sit closer to the tank. Touch wood  the modified one on my SX has not failed yet, but the Scootopia tap is carried as a spare, although I stripped it to check for flow & swarf beforehand as I'd heard there could be problems, which I didn't encounter. In fact, it looks an excellent product for the price.

Thanks for the replies. Forgot to say the tank is 1 and a half size tank and bolts on brackets to the underside of frame (hangs down in otherwise) so no rubbers underneath it and no opportunity to raise it, problem being the side of the normal fast flow knocks against the side of the engine mount before it can be lined up and threaded on ......i'll try a rear entry one

I had this problem with one of the bolt in tanks. I cut a bit off the threaded part of the tap which allowed it to be fitted and pulled up higher to clear engine mount. I had an old tap nut which had split so I screwed half of it on the tap before I cut the threads so I could work it over the cut edge to clean it up.

It worked well but turned out to be a waste of time, money and effort as the mounting bracket on the tank snapped after about 500 miles!

Thanks.....sorry one further question what could I use to seal the threads on the petrol tank thread as now fitted a new tap, petrol still weeps out ?

I guess what i'm asking is similar to using PTFE tape on radiator valves which stops water weeping through the threads, is there something similar for petrol taps ?

Thanks
