I use brass 3 or 3.5mm nuts and bolts ( from B&Q ). Double nut them to stop them coming loose. The button heads look good though, and hopefully they won't rust. That's why I went for the brass option.

Many years ago I riveted one on a DL I was restoring, and as the rivet popped, the riveting gun jumped and the sharp cut end of the rivet stem scratched freshly painted tool box door...

that's because you should have used the correct solid rivets, not pop rivets...

As Byron mentions, the solid rivets are the ones to use fitted using a rivet peening punch . Even with fresh paint with another pair of hands holding the rivet head hard up against a vice anvil these are easy to do..
