I use brass 3 or 3.5mm nuts and bolts ( from B&Q ). Double nut them to stop them coming loose. The button heads look good though, and hopefully they won't rust. That's why I went for the brass option.

that's because you should have used the correct solid rivets, not pop rivets...

As Byron mentions, the solid rivets are the ones to use fitted using a rivet peening punch . Even with fresh paint with another pair of hands holding the rivet head hard up against a vice anvil these are easy to do..
