Iwis chains

Does anyone know if all Iwis chains are stamped? Just bought a new one and no
markings on it at all. Came in the red Iwis cardboard box. All the others
I've ever had have been stamped that was all.

I recently bought one. No they are not stamped I bought mine through a reputable dealer in the red box with seal. I was more concerned in how much it stretched in the first 250 odd miles, will be opening it back up soon if it’s stretched any more I’ll be ditching it and fitting a Regina instead.

Mine was from a reputable dealer. It had silver stickers over the
ends rather than the hologram jobby. See how it is.

Really!! I wonder if they have changed them recently then? Mine has no markings and is bright in appearance as opposed to the dark coloured Regina (that is marked on every link).

The one I bought recently was not stamped but in a sealed box from Shawfire and Warren would not sell dodgy stuff.

I wonder if certain lengths are marked and others not? No that would be silly. Mine is an 82 link btw. And like I said mine has stretched in a couple of hundred miles or so. It will be stripped again at 1000 miles and if its hitting the casing (which It nearly was at 200) I’ll be looking for a refund and fit a Regina. As I said it came from a very reputable dealer who I know will be good as gold if there is a problem.

Just checked my iwis 82 link bought from SCK but not in its box but still stamped on the links and being darkish blue in colour.

There are several tales of woe on the internet regarding fake IWIS chains.
IWIS don't make it easy to identify their own gear. I find their website near useless.
They do make several variants of 3/8" roller chain. I assume that they will make a cheaper variant for applications that can make use of it. This ambiguity is just what the fakers rely on to pedal their inferior wares. There seems to be little evidence that IWIS themselves do anything positive to protect the integrity of their own products.
IMO if a manufacturer is known to use hologram seals on its packaging then its because they are aware that their products get faked. These seals are probably easier to fake than the products they are supposed to protect!
This chain issue has risen its ugly head on a number of occasions on this forum. Most of us are aware that IWIS do make a good chain product suitable for our high powered shopping trolleys, but what's the part number and who are the bonefide suppliers?
If anyone has some hard information regarding IWIS chain variants, I for one look forward to learning from it.

I've heard,I dont know how true it is,that Iwis make timing chains for cars and they are weaker in strength than drivechains for Lambrettas.I dont know if these are stamped.

Any 3/8" duplex chain from a reputable source & of genuine manufacture will be fit for purpose. The chains I have, & have fitted, include Iwis, Regina, Renold, TDCross & Morse. I rate Iwis no better, or worse, than the other manufacturers mentioned. As a design engineer, I have incorporated many power transmission components that have had to conform to rigorous Standards, & chain is no different if it is genuine, which it is more likely to be if obtained from a power transmission specialist, rather than from many a ‘Lambretta specialist’

I have made up chains from 79 to 83 link using either proprietary ‘one & a half links’ & connectors or by riveting in half links. None of the many I have made have failed or stretched to excess. On the other hand, I have witnessed a couple of occasions where chains made up by a ‘top tuner’ have failed due to the nature of the jointing method. The decision on brand depends upon the cost of, say, a five-metre pack when required, & I am fortunate to have some good contacts.

Timing chain stretch is not the stretching of the timing chain, it is an elongation of the timing chain caused by wear to the chain’s components. That is where the quality is designed & built in.

The Indian manufactured chains called Rolon are dire. I loaned one of my own chains to a race team @ a meeting (as we used to do to help others out) & got a brand new Rolon back in exchange. Never again….

plus take into account if you're using any brand of NEW chain then in theory you're supposed to change both sprockets too, in-order to achieve equal wear on all componants

I've used Andy "the chain man" for several years as he is / was the official distributor for Iwis in the UK, but I think he may have retired and passed the business on to Jason, who is now "the chain man", presumably still with the official blessing of Iwis, I hope.
