Bit of an update:

I had a Vespa JL exhaust kicking about and decided to put it on to see what fitment issues there might be. Held up with cable ties but still quite solid.

Quite a good fit as it turns out

I had the carb on with the throttle connected so thought about trying to start it.

Timing was set at a static 17* and i quickly connected a cdi.

This left the petrol. I quickly improvised a sauce bottle with a tapered end, this fit into the fuel pipe......another result !!

Choke on......started third kick

Couldn't believe it, revved cleanly and was quite responsive. Bits were rattling everywhere so killed the engine.

Gave it another 10 min and tried again. 4 kicks this time but started cleanly.

Tidied up and went in with a big grin on my face.

The temporary petrol feed

So i could test drive it i needed a petrol tank. With the quirkiness of the frame i decided to make my own.

First i made a template out of a cardboard folder:

I decided to 1053 aluminium for the tank. I made it slightly bigger than the template as i wanted about 9L. A rough calculation gave me just over. i'll have to wait till it's welded to check but it looks about right. Initially it's tacked up and i've still to fit the tap, filler neck and fastening brackets.

The tank looks a bit low but the fixings will lift it higher.

Next job is to finish the tank and add some strengthening braces to the frame.

Please tell me there's more than just the 40mm diameter steel tube under the frame loop and the pressed steel frame loop connecting the engine to the front end of the bike....

Yup, that's all that's holding it together

I thought someone else would have picked up on this, so well done for spotting it.

I've held fire bracing it till i sorted the tank and checked the engine fitted ok. I've got the engine and forks out at the moment and i'm waiting for a break in the weather to fit some steel to strengthen it up and fit the tank brackets. Pictures to follow.

On a side note:
I took it up to the engineer who did the engine for me , i asked him what he thought about scooter. A man of few words, he just said "dangerous" then walked off....

Unfortunately the sky is my garage roof !! so very little getting done at the moment. My series 3 which i use for rallies is also stripped down and i'm focusing on that at the moment.

when we get a break in the weather i'll have another push and try to get it rideable.

With the decent weather and a bit of time on my hands I decided to have another push with project.

Priority job was to strengthen the frame.

As you can see there nothing to support the rear section other than the 40mm tube.

So:This was made from 30mm tube with pre-formed bends and welded together

The next stage is to whip the engine out and do some significant welding.

By the way the forks are the original Ld but they won't be staying.

What with Covid, lockdown, no rallies/no interest very little progress.

With the recent sunshine i decided to wheel it out and start work.

A cylinder cowling was made from a Vespa cowl and fibreglass.

Won't get no awards for style but it fits and will make another when up and running.

Fitted a Ld mudguard onto the Vijay forks.....yet more problems !!

The Vijay forks are wider on the shoulder than the Ld ones, the mudguard didn't go the full way down, so it had to be cut away to allow a snug fit.

Also fitted a stand and some others bits.

Put it all together to see what it's looking like and was quite pleased
