My engine makes 20ftlbs ar 3000rpm, and peaks at 28ftlbs at 5700rpm. It revs on to about 6600rpm having peaked at 30bhp.

I can’t find any other engines making that sort of torque.

No I haven't, but I really wonder what more I need. I am sure Harry will remind me what more I need when I see him next.

I figure that if Innocenti were still making geared, 2-stroke Lambrettas, then my engine is about what they would want to put into production to compete against Vespa's GTS300. It is very easy to ride.

On my way back from my premature attendance at Chuck Swonnell's funeral, I was on the M25 when a 660cc-single motorcycle passed me. I sat on his tail in lane 3 for five of six miles before a traffic car brought us to a halt to recover a broken-down vehicle. While we were waiting, the motorcyclist called me over and we chatted. "Did you know you were doing 73mph back then?" he asked. I nodded, as I have satnav. He was very impressed (and a very nice chap). There was a bit more in the engine, but if I had overtaken him, I'd have had to keep it there (and burnt a lot more fuel).

I know there are faster scooters out there, but when I speak to people, they seem to want big torque rather than big hp, which I guess is why Fastfreddiescat started this thread.

Like Knowledge I also have a 283 Pro Porting. It’s currently with Harry for a freshen up an Upgrade to 294cc. I’ve had it for five years now (15,000 plus miles) and when it was first dyno’d it showed 22ftlb and 27Bhp which admittedly isn’t massive numbers but the ride is something else. Roll on power means it can stay in top gear most of the time, I love riding it and it’s great for long distance and still gives 9-10 miles per litre on long runs and at 4.1:1gearing (LI150 box) it’s sitting at low revs but returning motorway speeds. I use a modified Gori exhaust with a 29mm dia tail pipe but it’s quieter than a BGM. In that time I’ve only had one engine fault. Lost a ring peg.

I’ve also got a DSC Scotty steel lined TS1which pulls 4.3:1 gearing with a MB5 speed with a CST3 touring pipe and a 30mm PHBH that’s really nice to ride and I use this is as my go to scooter for everyday riding and rallies when riding in larger groups. It’s very easy to ride but still gives a thrill when you wind it on.

My most recent engine is a Quattrini 210 built by Chiselspeed a year ago. No tuning, out of the box, built with a 60 stroke crank to get 218cc. Dyno at build showed 20ftlb and 25Bhp. The ride is very torquey, the dyno shows a flat torque curve from low down and gives 20ftlb from 5500 to 6700 rpm. Exactly where you need it. 4.4:1 gearing with LI150 box. I wouldn’t hesitate to build another Quattrini, probably stroked to 225cc, and use up another of the small block casings I’ve got in the shed. Downside is they’re a bit noisy with an expansion pipe so I’m experimenting with an Avanti Ex-box at the moment (at least, once we are allowed to ride for leisure again)

Well that was an interesting hour. A noted tuner got in touch with me via FB and said that my figures could not be correct. Apparently, there is a constant that does not allow you to have as many ftlbs as bhp. He has let me to a website that can calculate this and it shows that if my machine makes 30bhp, it can only make 24ftlbs.

That's not really about tuning, just physics.

You can make 100 ft lbs with 10bhp if it develops it at low enough rpm.

I'm not suggesting that's realistic for one moment, but it's certainly possible.

Ships make huge horsepower at around 120rpm by developing massive torque.

Put some silly numbers into that calculator and you'll see straight away. 30bhp at 5000rpm is about 30 ft lbs.

I’ve just put the results from 2 different dyno sheets in to that website using BHP and RPM and it’s calculated the torque bang on both times
