home made cables

Postby nickw » Thu Oct 29, 2020 4:48 pm

Hi
I am wanting to make one or two choke cables to fit the different carbs I have. Does anyone know where to get the little barrel bits on the end. I have found all sorts of other 'ends' but not one's suitable for the choke,
thanks

Venhill sell the barrel bits such as you see in the headset and also the little brass tubes that you solder on to make a stop such as would attach a cable to an SH carb. Avoid ebay as the mark up on something costing 10p is ridiculous.

Excellent advice already given, but an alternative solution may lay with the modification of standard cycle cables that have the correct barrel to suit the choke lever. The other end will need a soldered nipple to complete the assembly along with a suitable washer @ the lever end.

Whenever I have needed to make a throttle cable to suit a larger carb I have bought cables intended for a tandem with a screw on nipple @ the pulley end.

Whilst on the subject of cables, I wonder whether anybody has resorted to making their own extra thick front brake cable by modification of a standard set intended for something else. To say that the quality of the Indian produced front disc brake cables is questionable is an understatement! It would be good to know if somebody has successfully modified a stouter cable with the correct pear shaped nipple to suit. All the better if it was, say, 3 mm inner.

(My apologies for the semi-hijack.... )

Thank you both for some excellent advice. I did get Venhills with a search engine but didn't look properly at their actual site, so thanks again

Or I could make them for you.

I have made hundreds of chokes cables, mainly short ones for people who have the carb on the TS1 side of the engine. Each is intended to be used without an elbow, but I can accommodate most requirements.

£7.50 for one (posted) +£5.50 for each subsequent cable. Black or grey.
