Silent Silencer with Performance

Postby Specialcase » Sun Nov 08, 2020 5:33 pm

Hi all
First post so go easy on me please
Couldn’t find my original ‘71 SX150 so bought an Li150s. It’s stripped ready for its rebuild & now with an Broady 195RT conversion. I know it’s been booted around before, but albeit a few years ago; but I’m looking for a silencer that actually SILENCES. I suppose with the RT it would have to have a 42mm system but wanting my “cake & eat it” Don’t want to slow it down but want it quiet. I like the AF Clubman - mainly for the price!! I’ll just be using the scoot for a trip to the Chippy or paper shop! (Yeah yeah I know!!) Would a standard one really choke the performance? HOPE YOU CAN HELP?
TIA

Welcome to the forum.

I was about to ask a similar question as I need a new pipe for my TV175 preservation project, though clearly I am looking for no performance gains as the engine is as Innocentiintneded.

Letsysee what replies we get, but I suspect true silencers are hard rock e by.

(In the big hall at Adria, a guy on a DL125 rode past me and the scooter barely made a noise. I suspect that scooter was standard, but it does show that it can be done)

Welcome to the forum mate.

Couple of points, I don't think your old SX150 will have been '71. They stopped making them in '68 however it could have been stood in a showroom for a year or two and first registered in '71.
Secondly if you want a quiet scooter you need a standard exhaust so that begs the question, why have you splashed out on an expensive RT kit when you are just using it for the shops. A standard set up would have been fine for your needs....and quiet. Sorry I know it's your choice but you did ask.

Agree with Rich on the RT kit choice but it’s ur scoot so ya can do whatever u please with it. As for standard pipes then my choice would be the scootopia copy(bang for buck) and reasonable quiet. Next would be the Af clubman 42mm, After That then the Bgm V4 clubman ;)

I've got a Scootopia clubman on an RT195 and it isn't too noisy, not as quiet as a standard exhaust but reasonably acceptable

Standard untouched 125 is about as quiet as it gets , probably as slow as it gets too though.

The thing is you've got a performance kit with improved porting and that will be reflected in the noise it makes. To be honest you'd be better off with a standard barrel, exhaust and with a standard carb. Particularly for what you want.
