BGM V4 vs Avanti ex box

Postby Stevepshipley » Wed Nov 18, 2020 4:46 pm

Anyone any experience of how the Ex-box performs with a Mugello 186 compared to a BGM clubman? I know there was an article in scootering a couple of years ago but I can’t find it.
I’m bored during this lockdown shit and wondered if it was worth trying the Ex-box. I’m running an Li 150 box with 16 front sprocket and a 30mm Dellorto.

Cheers steve

I have no experience of the mugello 186 kit, but I replaced my BGM exhaust on my ts 225 with a Ron Moss ex box & the difference was a massive improvement over the BGM , better acceleration & improved torque, if you know anyone who has one they could lend you to try, then I don't think you will be disappointed ;)

Check these...

Avanti X Box v BGM v4 (you tube thesteelweasel 9 May 2020)

Lambretta Avanti Ex Box exhaust (you tube Kickback garage 1 Nov 2020)

The consensus on the BGM v4 seems to be that power output (compared to the v3) was sacrificed for a quieter pipe

I’m an Ex-box convert. I haven’t got a mugello but I’ve got 3 scooters, all with different engine configuration, all ridden, one with a sidecar, all 3 with Ex-box (2 are ST end can version). The Gori and 2 CST pipes are hung up in the garage. My opinion on the Ex-box exhaust is that they fit very well and really work.

Has anyone compared the ex box to an early MB/BGM Clubman please? If so, what were your thoughts?

The Cologne city home boys tend to be on it... A top Lambrettista, met along the way, spunked (big) squids to make a (supposedly TS1 friendly) BGM v3 box pipe useable (cut it in half & bung in a bigger, non strangling tail pipe), the more easily affordable & available pipes that work the better eh... 8-)

If you look on Facebook, no doubt that you will be aware of the various Lambretta specific sections for tuning etc.

Whilst some Posters on there undoubtedly see the tuning sections as an opportunity to use the site as a shop window for their products, there has been some information added to no such specific site recently by Ron Moss. He is not attempting to capitalise by preaching to a captive audience, merely to clarify the situation concerning his product & the 'ascociation' with Darrell Taylor. Darrell commented on Ron's remarks & they are obviously singing from the same hymn book.

It really is worth looking for & unequivocally clarifies what is going on & the potential of Ron's product. In my mind, anyhow ;)

Ron's scale of manufacture may be more 'cottage industry' than the competition, but the fact that he has published information that the manufacturer of his product informed him of, says a lot for his integrity.

How refreshing compared to the smoke & mirrors approach adopted by others just in it for the money......

Apparently so Rich, Covid19 slowed the whole testing n production down hence why it’s been lined for for Xmas release and what do us lambretta riders like for Xmas :D new toys too play with

FYI - i have just replaced the KRP1 exhaust i have had on my TS1 for many years with a Ron Moss Ex Box ST. Taking on board some advice from Ron i took a gamble and lowered the final drive ratio from 5.0 to 4.7. A couple of miles test run and it works a treat, pulls just as well if not better than before low down, took it up to 70mph no problem with more to go. Not checked jetting but it felt right as is. Ok it wasn't cheap but it is a very well made piece of kit that actually fitted without issue. I love it.

Regards Super

Sorry if this is irrelevant, but a bgm clubman stub is nearly what you want. It just needs turning down by about 0.5mm on the radius.

Loads of them in people's sheds.
