Thinking out loud

Postby Scooterlam » Tue Dec 15, 2020 11:09 pm

I have just rebuilt my forks,
Well 2 sets as I swapped links and rods over.
On both sets the copious amounts of grease applied many years ago had been contaminated with so much road crap the springs had nowhere to compress.
Not really sure what the grease is for.
With a rod through the middle they can't flex and touch the inside of the leg and we don't grease the rear spring.
So is it to allow the spring to slide on the rod?
If so wouldn't modern graphite or silicon sprays do a better job.
Have I missed some thing.
Also would a suitable plastic sleeve over the bottom half of the spring Keep things cleaner.

"Also would a suitable plastic sleeve over the bottom half of the spring Keep things cleaner".
Or maybe some kind of small CV joint type rubber boot?
definitely food for thought though ;)

A road bike inner tube would be about the right size to go over the spring.

Doesn’t the grease protect everything from rust?

Lots of other products do that.

Best way for you to find out what is the best solution to your problem is to try the other products out then and report back on your findings, good luck .

Definately thought provoking.

Years ago, I assembled some GP forks with PTFE spray only which worked. They didn't squeel with metal to metal contact as the pushrod oscillates inside the spring. I only used the spray as I had been given it as a sample & could think of no other use

Subsequently, I have used chain lubes (again, a gift etc) but if I were to use grease again, I have never applied in massive amounts, as to do so is obviously a sh1te trap.

I like the idea of a CV type bellows on the lower area :)
