Top shock mount repair

Okay, this is a Vega but the same principles will apply

The threads towards the end are now beyond repairing with a die. This is an old photo of the mount.



The diameter of the end of the shock mount is only 12mm which doesn’t give too much scope to repair it with a stepped stud of, say, 10mm/12mm.

Any of you any engineering experience of how I can replace or repair the rear shock mount please?

What is the thread?

If it is, say, M12 x 1.5 (just less than 17 TPI) then you might manage to run a 7/16" BSF (18 TPI) die down it.

In that case, 7/16" BSW is close with 14 TPI. However, please check out the technical details before committing

If I'm right, a split die is the way to go, gradually increasing the cut to produce a tidy thread. If I had one, I'd lend you a die, but @ £3.25 including P&P:

Finally, I got round to taking the frame to the engineers. They propose to cut it off and make another longer replacement. When I say longer, I mean more thread as anyone with a Vega will know there are precious few threads visible once you have the shock absorber fitted.

I’ll post a picture when I get it back.

I could very well be wrong but I looked at the shock stud on mine today and I'm fairly sure that the boss is either plastic or hard rubber on mine

That’s just a plastic cover, mate. It does perform a function though, it keeps the inner bush of the shock absorber from flexing.
