Many thanks for your contribution Steve.

Great suggestion, these nuts. Don't need them yet, but going to order a few and replace the brass ones when I next fiddle with the exhausts. Thanks for the tip on how to improve a 50 year old fitting.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with K-nuts, I always used them on race cars instead of nylock nuts.

We use K nuts at work on the race car engines, great locking nuts and washer combined.
Ideal for Lammie exhaust use, why struggle trying to hold a washer and brass nut to fit "upwards" on our steeds! :?

Work well for me, think of lots of other uses on a Lambretta for these nuts...............

Cheers

Found them on google 70p + vat each.

Question: Do they undo ok when required and can they be reused?
Do you use Loctite on them ?

Moving off topic slightly but now I've got my K nuts, whats the consensus on best exhaust gaskets?

I bought some of those a year or so back but I haven't used them as they look a lot like the steel nuts used on Vespa GTS exhaust studs which are VERY prone to rusting. I have experienced this on my commuter GTS, the nut rusts so badly that the corners round off and make it nigh on impossible to get off  Perhaps there's enough oil leakage around a Lambretta exhaust to keep the rust at bay though ;)

Hi Chris, I have never had any issues taking them off, I use a deep 8mm 6 point socket for the job. No need for Loctite. I personally don't like to re-use any type of locking nuts, I think they should be treated as 1 shot wonders, how often do you take an exhaust off?

Hi Jon, we have TS1's & I just use fibre gaskets from MB, sorry not sure on any other type of exhaust?

Hi Coaster, I know what you mean! To be honest yes the nuts get rusty but for me they have always come off ok.

Back when we used to race in the 80's a tip we got from a top racer to stop exhaust studs coming loose was to leave your barrel ( sealed with just the barrel stud holes open ) & your studs out in the weather before assembly so the rust could take hold. Bring them back in a week or so later & assemble!! Studs never seemed to come loose as i re-call - Rust work(s)ed for us ;)

Like anything in life nothing is fail safe, all I can say is they work for me. Can't believe this got to 2 pages!!....Steve

That's good enough for me. If we didn't explore and try these things we'd still think the earth was flat !

Just picked up this thread and bought some k nuts.... I found them so tight to do up that I worried about stripping the threads on the studs or even worse shearing them or stripping the threads in the barrel.... Thought I'd remove them before doing any harm and one brought the stud out with it!

Any further advice on this?

I don't know what application you are using k-nuts for, but I have used them for over 20 years......but not on exhausts (M7 x 1.0). Only because that size wasn't available to 'test' from work places!

If I were fitting them, I'd use a smear of Copa-slip on the threads. I've often used M7 x 1.0 high tensile Cap Head Socket Screws cross drilled & lockwired. You may have to cut down a hexagon drive (allen) key to fit, but it's worth doing. That's into a cast iron thread, though, such as 'standard' or Rapido.

As for M8 x 1.25 k-nuts on hub studs, I've used those for years & modified my SIP rims to suit rather than use those nuts that come with them.

Had a change of mind...... Decided to go with the MB longer brass nuts and studs, I can see the k nuts are good but I'm not comfortable with them on my manifold studs. Thanks for the replies...
