A bit more work on the legshield. There’s no no point in going too far until the frame has been on the jig and any remedial work done.

Well, I’ll get the frame back this week but the remainder of the bodywork is away awaiting splits being welded up. In the meantime, I thought I’d take a look at the top end as, a while back, I had a soft seize. At the time, I put it down to the tank being low on fuel as it cleared up after I’d filled up a few miles further on. That said, for the remainder of the journey home (probably 50 miles, or so) I took it very easily.

On getting home, I checked it over and the standard air filter rubber had developed a split at the bottom by the actual carb. There were no other obvious air leaks. The rubber elbow was replaced and the scooter ran fine after that.

Now, whilst I had the engine out, I decided to take the cylinder off, expecting to find evidence of a seize.

There is no classic sign of a seize although there are some scores on the piston to the left of the gudgeon pin in the photo below. I can only assume that a small foreign body has got in there when I think I had seized. All three ring pegs are still in place.





All cleaned up now.

The only engine modification I did to my standard TV175 was to machine the head to give a sensible squish. I think mine was in excess of 2.5mm so I took it back down to about 1.3mm. I probably need to do a compression calculation before I run the machine as it may now be prone to overheating due to a higher compression.

I have just ordered a 0.1mm aluminium base gasket so, hopefully, I can get the squish down to 2/2.1 now. That’s with no head gasket too. But, the engine was a pleasure to ride before so I am happy to leave the cylinder head as it is.

I hope to have this back on the road in time to, once again, do the Redcar - St Bees C2C on it.

A few hours on the dry build. Work still needed on some gaps and straightness of the runner boards, which is no surprise when you are trying to use the old bodywork.











I popped the bottom bearing track on the forks so I could put the headset on and check that the headset cleared the horn casting. Unfortunately, I never thought to put the bearing shield on. I think this is why there appears to be a large gap above the chrome ring.

Sadly, I am going to have to replace the Carello rear light housing that is painted and fitted. I have an old original Falbo light housing with good threads for the top lens holes. Am I correct - the Aprilia lens uses the top holes and the CEV uses the bottom?

I only ask because I thought I'd have to on my s2, but managed to come up with a way of saving it. In my case it was because one of the studs for mounting to the frame loop was goosed.

The bulb connections are on the verge of falling apart. As a result and also to make a much brighter rear light (and improve the headlight too), I have decided to go down the MB LED route. The MB LED unit won't fit with the Carello housing.

As the housing wasn’t going to be any use to anyone anyway, I took a dremel to it. It’s not a perfect fit as you can’t get the LED board flat. It’ll do for now.

This is the first time I have largely rebuilt a scooter on a table. I’m unsure as to whether it is any easier really.

Anyway, it needs to come off before I can proceed anymore. I keep bashing my head on the roof when trying to do the headset wiring

I didn’t really intend to be so far advanced in the build. Just doing an hour, or so, every other day mounts up.

But, no, this won’t be finished for Friday

More or less finished. I need to fettle the throttle cable slightly and replace the front wheel inner tube (I stupidly used the wrong angle adaptor which interferes with the fork bolt very slightly).

With no extra weight from spare wheels, racks etc., it is a joy to ride though

Thanks for the positive comments. It is not concours but, if I say so myself, it’s pretty good seeing as I started with some very battered bodywork and steadfastly refused to buy replacement panels. The main crossmember was the only new part used, other than some rubbers, nuts and bolts.

The rear mudguard is a little bit problematic. It had to be welded as it had rotted through close to the rear shock absorber. But now I have to use spacers to push the shock away from the mudguard. You can see that the shock nuts stand proud of the engine and frame. I’ll have to keep a close eye on this for a while.

It's a cracker, and my personal favourite lambretta.

As far as not being concours is concerned, I really don't care. A nice lambretta that isn't wrapped in bubble wrap is far better way to enjoy them than just polishing and moving around in the back of a van.

It's how lambrettas really were when we were kids.
