Gear issues SIL GP

Postby jdevane5 » Mon Jun 02, 2025 2:06 pm

Hi There,

Im just running through snags from my recent build and Im having a right game with the gears.
I go through the process , set on neutral at handlbar (and have someone hold in neutral position), do the nearest to wheel cable up first, check it goes in 1st gear OK at the handlbar, then back to neutral and set up outer gear cable. I then put a slight bit more tension in both cables but not too tight.

I then jump on for a test ride and after a while of use, the gears slowly reposition at the handlebars...and everything is way out in terms of handlbar gear marking. The gear also become difficult to engage at the handlbar.

Before I get deeper into the issue -Any ideas?
I did replace the gearbox as part of my build and got it working well on the bench.

The cable and liners are all new and I just rechecked the gear linkage and brackets on the casing which are all tight.

I will take the headset cover off and see whats happening a the handlbar internals first before I stick the scoot on the workshop lift.
The fact all the gears shift position at the handlebars is a weird one.

Is it the cable liner runs or gear box related.. Anyone ever experienced a similar issue?
The clutch seems fine and have the Uni Multi Clutch with AF 6 plate.

Cheers
JD

Are the cable outers positioned correctly in the headset clamp?

Incidentally, you can do this on your own. Line the gear change up with neutral and then wrap masking tape around to stop it moving. Then start adjusting the cables.

So had a look at the headset end and one of the gear cables had partly come out of the cable pulley.

One cable was also in the headset clamp and one wasn't...

The cable ends seem to come out of the headset clamp easliy.
Also found at the engine end,the expensive anodised SP gear swivel kit I had fitted was very stiff on the swivel joint , so likley added more friction into the cable and liner.

I'm ordering two more gear cables and liners to be on the safe side and lossened up the SP gear swivel joint to attempt to take any additional friction out of the assembly.

Might also be a good time to renew your trunnions? (always check that the little disc plate is fitted between the grub screw and the cable, else your grub screw will saw through your cable strands!)

Thanks the Trunnions are all good (brand new), part of the SP annodised gear pivot assembly kit, I checked them out today whilst stripping the cables out.

The only thing I see that could be an issue is the cable liner fit into the steering clamp which is not great -That might improve with the new cable liners ordered...

If your gear outers are cable tied high up and too tight on the steering tube they will pull out of their seats especially when the headset is turned.Always allow some slack to allow the cables to move with the steering.
