maiden voyage, couple of issues

Postby jaybee » Thu Jun 12, 2025 10:53 am

having got this "new" 1960 series 2 125 insured, and my test done, i had to take it out, if only to work out how to use the gears.
somewhat scarily did 2 wheelies :o whilst revving too much in a gear change, but i'm getting there. its a 185 cyclinder in a 125 engine.
i found out that it really didnt want to go up a hill in 4th (having been ok on the flat), and having changed down, it felt somewhat underpowered even in lower gears as if it had a minor blockage in the fuel.
this lasted a few mins (on flat) and then it seemed ok again after going down a hill. i also found a significantly different engine tone,in neutral, between me sitting with one foot on the ground and fully sitting down.
anything to worry about or is this all part of the fun?

If you've never ridden a Lambretta before it may seem a bit strange to start with. Firstly you need to give it full beans in each gear it's no good going quickly through the gears as you would in a car as the engine will struggle. Also choice of gearing is key as depending what's been done to the engine will greatly effect how you ride it. Unfortunately some of these "kits" without the right gearing and exhaust can be terrible to ride as the power delivery comes in the wrong place. Perseverance is the name of the game if once you get the hang of the gearchange the engine won't dip so much between gears.
Hope this helps

thanks, so just get used to it! as for the period of underpower, would this likely have been caused by being in the wrong gear on thehill, sort of flooding the engine when it struggled, ie a temporary issue rather than a sign of something more serious
