Tight chain

Postby shawit » Fri Feb 06, 2026 7:33 pm

I have fitted a new IWIS 80 link chain ( bought from a reputable source ) to replace the chain on my TV175. The sprockets are the original 46 x 15. With the new chain there is zero free play. Is it inadvisable to use this chain?

Running a tight chain is only going to end in tears for sure.
Something doesn't sound quite right here.
I would suggest that you do a physical count of both sprocket teeth and a link count of the chain to confirm they meet expectation.

Thanks for the reply.
Everything has been double checked including confirmation of there being 80 links on the old chain. Spoke to supplier of the chain. Refund offered. It wasn't the first time he'd heard of this. I also found others describing the same problem with tight IWIS chains on 2 other websites.
Expecting another manufacturer's 80 link chain this week which I'll try this weekend. I'll update when fitted.

Never had an issue with Iwis chains myself.
Do you think the chain you had could have been a fake?
Renold or Tsubaki chains are good alternatives.
Just don't use a Rolon chain. They really are pants.

I bought an Iwis chain and was sent a Meceur and told it was the same. It wasn't and went straight back.

Had a similar problem from a chain bought from Scooter Restorations a few months back- Paul happily took back the chain and refunded me. He said it could be part of a bad batch. Paul ;)

Fitted MB one tonight. This gave 5mm play upwards.
All teeth and links checked on the IWIS chain I.e right numbers. It was simply too tight giving zero play. Every link marked IWIS.

In agreement with the supplier of the IWIS, I'm keeping it to see if it will fit 2 other engines I intend to overhaul this year. If it doesn't fit, the supplier has said they will take it back even if it's in a years time. I'll report back.
