fitted the fuel tank to my gp.....but cannot set it centrally...approx 1/4 in of ctr.
thing is its not original tank but s3 which i believed would be fine.
All straps and rubbers aligned?????????????

It could be the angle of the photo but the tank looks to be tilted backwards. If you slacken the straps and turn it anti-clockwise that would move the filler cap forward.

A S3 tank should fit a GP okay - years ago I never knew the difference and fitted whatever I could get hold of !
difficult to tell why from photos -they can be a pain.
Try slackening off the straps (but not completely) and centre it up - ask someone to hold it in place while you tighten it up evenly from side to side - then see how it starts to pull up.
it does look tilted backwards and again I cant see properly but have you missed the square rubbers that go on the seem

cheers guys....will slacken off and try to rotate fwd, prob need someone to hold in position and tighten up....looks like the missus will be helping....lol

I've found that WD40 etc on the rubbers helps to move the tank about as the rubbers grip too much to allow the tank to settle in position. There seems to be various positions as to where the strap trunnions go, my untouched import has the trunnions on the top of the tank and can only be got at by removing the airbox .

Are the strap trunnions at the wrong side of the tank

this would pull it backwards when you tighten also have you got the seam rubbers fitted

tank tightening can really be a pain at times and others just fall into place.
i think in this instance all you can do is slacken off a bit , centralise the tank and tighten evenly.
it is surprising how much a tank can move out of line by just a very slight overtightening of one strap

You have some rubber blocks missing. The ones that slip over the edge rim. They are square with a slit in one side. Without them the strap will rub on the lip and create bare metal leading to an area prone to rusting easier. They must be fitted.

When done, make sure every single rubber and strap is in place before tightening as yours were not first time around. It should line up perfectly if you follow that.
