Culo Grasso the Series 1

Postby Bofs » Wed Dec 17, 2014 11:54 pm

Time for a catch-up on the scoot front. Continuing on from my previous thread about the belgian Series 2.
Well I pilferred the bits and sold it on with the old series 1 engine and forks fitted.

Here`s the Series 1 who will be called Culo Grasso :)

Image

So last week my mate Studs was in England and brought back a few scoots, one of which was mine...happy chappy indeed  ;D

Got stuck in...

Image

Image

Loom ordered, teflon cables, LED rear light, rear rack, ACF-50 to seal in the rusty paint.
Also got a seat but now inclined to keep the old saddles.

So got the engine and front end in at the weekend. Just need to fit the cables and loom, fit CDI and regulator and hook it all up.
Put it back together and cross my fingers.
Then register it and hit the road, more updates this weekend when hopefully it`ll be up and running :)

I really like this. I can testify that ACF50 will work really well on that, particularly on the sparsely paint covered leggies. How it works, I have no idea but it does.

Cheers folks, keeping the series 2 wasn`t really an option, I would have had to build a similar engine for this, then add a disc up front too. With a bit of wheeling and dealing and transplanting I ended up getting the Imola engine and forks/disc for free so I was well chuffed. Flat rear rack on order too.

Yep the ACF stuff seems to be the best thing for the job, head fekked today after our work do last night so early start in the morning and hopefully a bit of progress to report.

Was a bit pissed off on friday after phoning Bennetts to sort a cover note (not needed in the rest of the UK) to get it registered to hear the twats don`t supply them. Back to square one

Not much to report, been sick as a dog all xmas so only got back to the shed today.

Fancied an LED tail-light so decided to make my own from a £5 universal bike one off ebay. These seem to have a lot more elements than the ones sold for the purpose.
The original light being past it`s sell-by date :?

Took it apart and as luck would have it the two holes lined up with the lense screw holes nearly perfectly :D
It remains to be seen whether it works or not.

Also discovered that I`d given away too many levers with the Series 2 so had to McGuyver a new lever out of a Series 3 one. It has a ball end so should match the hydraulic one nicely.
Got the engine cabled up and the long throttle cable fitted for the 30mm so a few more steps down the road. Waiting on a new brake switch and lightswitch to get the wiring done now.

My new rack arrived in the post over the holidays too so will fit that when I`ve finished the tail-light..

Got the electrics and lights sorted today, except for the horn, dead as a doughnut :?

LED tail-light works sweet after faffing around with the odd coloured wiring.

Thanks for the inspiration Bofs. Fitted one of those led units into my SIL plastic GP unit with self-tappers and it seems to work a treat. 8-)

Glad to hear it worked Marty.

Got back in the shed again to day for a few hours and fitted the new kill-switch and a new 12v horn, all working after a bit of faffing about.
Here`s a pic of the hydraulic hose routing which was a PITA to route and sort, not 100% happy with it but will suck it and see.

Also picked up new keys for my original locks through Jem Booth, well chuffed to say the least :D

Image

Got the front end all refitted and headset top so getting nearer the finish line. The speedo cable in the forks is a bloody Indian fitting one so another on order now to fit the Italian speedo :(

Image

Image

A few odds n ends to do now.Bleed the front brake, fit rear runners and bridge piece. There a a lot of splits in the front mudguard which I will weld up and then bend it back into shape.

Image

I applied to get it registered last week so hopefully will have a plate through for it soon. We used to have our own NI DVA but this was closed down and everything was centralised in Swansea so it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Couldn`t wait any longer, got enough done to make it roadworthy. Painted on the number plate, brakes done, final check on the nuts and bolts and away we go.

Hi Bofs, have you got a pic of the Italian speedo? Was it/will it working? Mine on 1960 series 2 is f'ed, took it out and the bits inside are f'ed. I might contact Jem Booth about options

Thanks folks, I reckon the rack is a bit blingy, might have to wirebrush it

It should work ok, just waiting on the right size italian cable after an ebay plonk sent me an Indian one  Jem`s your man for the speedo.
I`d love one of the SIP digital ones, but won`t be happening any time soon. Maybe add a leggie toolbox too down the line.

A wee spin northwards yesterday for another shakedown, all the way to the North Pole.
Put on the Pirelli Superbiker Diablo app on the phone on the way back and hit a genuine top speed of 70mph GPS on one stretch.
Sadly the saddle seats have to go, ok for nipping around town but crap for distance.

Dunno what "grasso" means, have to google it. Know what culo is, it's the same in Spanish!
Funny name for a café mate!
I had a rack just like that on my first scoot, an SX 150. When I put it on everyone thought I should've chucked it away...
Good luck with the new/old scoot!
