motorbike dolly

Postby kennystag » Thu Feb 12, 2015 3:56 pm

Hi All,
I am picking up my GP from Glasgow next month. What i was thinking of for moving the bike was a motorbike dolly, it bolts on to the the tow bar, the front or back wheel sits on the frame. What my question is will it be ok to use this for towing , will it do any damage if the back wheel is turning in neutral for 200 miles, or would it be better if it was the front wheel, or not atall.
Cheers

Hi
Don't think I like the sound of towing a scooter in one of those frames further than across town let alone 200 miles. Just hire yourself a small van & buy a couple of straps, one day/ weekend hire will only be about £50 plus fuel. A lot less hassle plus lot less chance of an damage. If your not precious about your car & money is a issue why not just load the scoot in the back. Lambretta's will fit in most medium sized cars one way or another. ;)

Kenny,

If you place your location on this thread, or in your profile, you might get an offer of a trailer from someone. If your in Ipswich, you can borrow mine.

interesting question.
I looked into buying one of these Tow hitch dollies for occasional recovery :D they are available on ebay and elsewhere for around £75 which is quite reasonable .
The thing I particularly like about them is they fit any tow hitch and fit in your boot and take minutes to fit to the hitch but I couldn't see how you could make certain that the scoot wouldn't fall into gear during towing.

Its just occured to me that it should be perfectly feasable to tow a scoot by the rear wheel and lash the handlebars to keep the steering and front wheel straight. That way you could tow for a thousand miles without any risk to the gearbox .
The worse that could happen is the tyre might burst due to heat from the excess weight .You would probably want to remove the speedo drive cable to the wheel though

Dayum  I just built an expensive scooter rack ....

I'm guessing you might be the only lambretta owner in the village then...

Tie wrap the clutch lever to the bars and it wouldn't go into drive, wouldn't recommend it but it would work.

never thought of that ! mind you I'd still worry that the clutch nipple would slip or cable break
