I would say the tabs need to be directly opposite the opening so that they are both supported by the groove.
If they were positioned in the opening there would be a tendency for the loose ends to maybe twist out

Thanks, have followed the general thoughts on the circlip.
Lots of Google pics show the same.

Carried on fitting the body work. Have to say the job Redditch Blasting did was really good, very accurate masking which has made things so much easier.

Rear shoes on, drum on (not a TV3 drum but later according to Stickys book), levers painted dull silver, gear box change links fitted.
Spent 1/2 hour searching for the rear shoe return spring, Looked EVERYWHERE for ages only to find it still attached to the old shoes. does this only happen to me?

This all soaks up a huge amount of time, glad I'm not paying for all these hours.....

Expect to get the chrome tomorrow which means the forks can go on and the handle head stock fitted up and cables too.

Fast progress now until the panel work.

Yet ANOTHER order sent to Scooter Restorations.

Will soon need a rubber set (leg shield edge trim, panel to body side trim, air intake gasket etc in grey.

I'm sure I've read on here that some repro sets have 'thick' mouldings where the side panels fit and you can get the side panels to fit.
Who makes the 'best' ones?

OK, pause for thought on the rubbers!

Spent hours in the garage today, boosted by the chrome getting finished at Castle Chrome.
Parts are great and the rescue of the lamp surround a marvel. £50 for all this and triple plated too. They are crowded-out with work.

Fitted up all the handle parts into the lower head stock casing and managed to shear the gear change pulley clamping screw, my first fastener failure so far...Got the broken threaded part out by drilling it in the right direction and it unscrewed itself

Can't believe how much time it all takes.
Cleaned the original grips with Fairy Liquid and the kitchen floor scrubber and now look like new, nice to keep the original parts.
Fitted the forks, made a thin spanner for the top race 'nut' and found an old bike bottom bracket bearing spanner to be the exact size for the C spanner locking ring.

On that positive note decided I'd done enough today.

A question as ever: The key number on the steering lock, is it the same key for the ignition lock? As the ign lock has no ID number obviously externally, and none anywhere else I think this must be so?

Realised I've bought the wrong front dampers. I bought the cheap Escort units that are large in diameter compared to what came off (the knackered originals), so I hope the Italian £60 ones are the correct size?
They came from Scoot Rest so hope I can exchange them.

I think you can get sets with a common key but I'm not sure that they were supplied like that. Original ignition switches will have a brand cast in like OSAM and a number on the bit where the key goes as would the steering and toolbox locks.

Have you got keys and do they fit any of the locks?

They are V@&?a then! Ok by me.

I have a number on the steering lock and another different number on the toolbox lock and nothing on the ignition key...

Of course, no keys with the scooter when I bought it.
I don't really want to change the locks over.

Best I get a re cut replacement key for the steering and tool box and hope one fits the ign lock.
At worst I have to get a new ignition lock.

On another tac, should the gear speed numbers and marker be painted red?

Do a search on here's for 'booth' and you'll find the email address for Jem Booth, he's the guy for keys, if you have the numbers he can usually make the key, you could take a punt with the steering and toolbox and hope the ignition is one or the other, but if it's an aftermarket one its a bit of a lottery in switch quality and whether you can get keys made, again Jem would be able to tell you.

Yes, gear change numbers and V arrow should be red for most models. GP/DL models have black.

I have had replacement keys from Jem Booth. Excellent service. He has the blanks to cut from.

As you have done with originality ( Vespa grips) don't be precious about the dampers. Escorts are very good and probably better than the slim Italian dampers

I'm thinking of counting up the material cost so far, but as with all the other daft projects I've done (all of my projects) it will scare me.

I hope to get the TV up to body paint by the end of March as the motorsport season kicks off mid April.
Also, need it to me much warmer to spray paints.

I think I'm about 1/3 into the scooter by now.

Big mistake in my view, NONE of the aftermarket switches are as good as the original Italian ones. The afore mentioned Jem Booth also rebuilds original ignition switches and as mentioned, is THE person to talk to about it. Apart from dubious quality of modern switches, most come with different coloured wires and switch contact arrangements. Not saying that any of this applies to the one you have bought but I would personally definitely stick with the original.

Scootopia's remade switches and locks are like no other remakes I've seen. They look original and they function as original... yet the prices are excellent, often a fraction of other expensive tat! If you've not seen or tried their switches/locks then you really need to. Even original markings and numbers are as original. I see lots of instances of people selling off the Scootopia parts as NOS... I kid you not.

Don't do it! You will only make yourself sad. My £3000 budget is £3000 over budget and I'm not finished.
