Notifying Insurance/DVLA

Hi

I've just fitted a Mugello 198 kit, JL3 Exhaust, 60mm Road/Race crank & 28mm Dellorto Carb to my Series 2.

My question is, ' Now that the CC of the engine has been increased, do I need to inform DVLA using the form within the log book, & also let the insurance know of the modifications done?'

I've checked on DVLA's website, & it says I may need to send a mechanics report from the garage where the work was undertaken. I did the work myself, as this is a straightforward off the shelf bolt on kit, so therefore won't have a mechanic's report.

I know quite a few people never bother to inform DVLA or their Insurance company, but I just thought if I was to do everything above board & by the book, how easy is it? or is it more hassle than it's worth?

You should inform DVLA of the change in capacity, particularly if it changes the taxation class. If you fitted the kit yourself get the supplier to give you a letter on headed paper and include a copy of the receipt.

You definitely must inform your insurer of modifications or risk your insurance being invalid or rejected in the event of a claim.

Sent the DVLA a notification of colour change from cream/grey to green/yellow and engine change to 186 and guess what the new reg doc came back cream/grey and 150cc??

Spot on, I did just this when I put an imola kit on, I had a local Dvla office so it was simple as they sent it all off. Insurance a must

I listen to Jeremy Vine with some reservations, but there was something on there last week where a guy in his car was hit by driver in a yellow car. The yellow car was previously a different colour and the insurance company used this as an excuse to not pay out for the smash.

When challenged by the victim, the insurers said the driver of the yellow car was insured, but they wouldn't pay out. WTF. If the car is insured, they must pay out, surely? Isn't that the definition of being insured?

On that basis, any modification to your scooter, even a sticker (there was a case of a vicar who's claim for a stolen oil sump was not paid out because she had Jesus Saves stickers down the side of the car), the insurance company will find justification not to pay out.

We all work a dangerous line, but then I could make a case for a standard scooter being a dangerous properistion in 21st Century traffic.

Agree fully inform the ins co of ANY mods to the scooter but the DVLA isn't important (IMO)

Your insurance will ask 'Are there any modifications for the factory / stock specification?', or similar, if you don't declare them then on your head be it.

They don't need to ask as its all on their DB from the DVLA, if there's an accident and their loss adjustor notes it they have an out.

yes you should inform them and your insurance company, saying that I did this and my insurance document came back on 3 separate occasions with the old cc on instead of the new cc. stupid dumb ass folk who aint got a clue in my opinion.

I just informed footman James about changing my standard 150 to a Gt186

They didn't make a charge for this change and simply sent out new paperwork.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
I'm just waiting to get it dyno'd, then everything will be all done. As soon as that's done I'll notify DVLA & my insurance.
I'd rather be safe than sorry
