On the SX headset the thread is 3mm, I seem to remember.
The threads on my headset top were knackered so I tapped them out to 3.5mm, the size of electrical socket box screws. Any good electrical wholesaler will have a 3.5mm tap.
Not sure if this would apply to all headsets though.

I've done a gp not so long ago
Bought the correct size rivnut (m3 or 4) - you can get ss or ali
Drill out the hole to accept the rivnut
Insert the rivnut and add some epoxy glue around it.
worked a treat

I got a lad to ally weld a knackered headset hole. It was huge / knackered and put a blob (techincal term) I then just drilled and tapped a new thread.

Found some self tapping inserts, hopefully should do the job.

I would be wary of putting any inserts in that require the use of a pop rivet gun, could crack the ally, I have always found the pop rivet head method works quite well, put in from behind
