Soark problem. points ignition

I know its not a ser 3, but same setup, just rebuilt a Lui motor original Points, couldn`t get a spark, cleaned and gapped points, good spark, after 3 kicks no spark, same again cleaned points, good spark 3 kicks no spark, keeps on like that, bearing in mind this motor wasn`t running when I got it, still fitted with the original condensor and coil, could this be a condensor or coil problem, or something else, any ideas anyone.

Remove the plug from the engine and take the suppressor cap off the end of the HT lead.
Ignition turned on..
Holding the HT lead and kicking the engine you should see a spark jump a good 5mm or more at kick speed between the end of the lead and the engine case.

If it's a constant and reliable spark then plug or cap are faulty if it's not a consistent and reliable spark then it's earlier in the system and now you have to start looking.

This is where using a multi meter can make a big difference.

I'm not going to try to guess where the fault is and I'm sure there will be plenty of things you already know how to check.

But do the simple things first, then if you get no luck, dig deeper.

Done what you suggested, no plug cap just end of lead, get a good spark for one or two kicks then nothing.

you can do the same with the ignition stator coil lead. Pull it out of the junction box connector hold it close to earth and see if you are getting a consistant spark from the ignition stator coil . If not you'll probably need to pull the stator off and test/replace the condensor or the stator coil
