Has anyone got any contact details for Jem Booth. I'd be interested in dropping him an email to see what he says

its my belief that all the cheap speedos on the market are the same internal mechanism with a different face.

you can pick up a new speedo of all speeds and type (60/70/90mph/kph) for as little as £10 - so you cant tell me that each one is has different calibrated mechanism inside to suit.

that said the £15 90mph repro`s I have on my GP and SX are smooth and not to far out up to about 60 then its anyones guess and is going strong - so im not complaining

I have just checked my £20 repro 90mph speedo and its bang on (to a gps )at 30-55mph , we didn't check it below or above those speeds.
It reads light by 10miles over 110 mile ride, it has a lag when accelerating hard.
The biggest issue was fitting it. It's was too big to fit inside the headset recess, I fitted the repo innards in my italian casing and it working fine, then the needle started jumping around. The jumping was due to the cable slipping out of the drive, reseated and recrimped the brass bush and its been steady over today's 110 mile ride.
I'm happy I can stick to the speed limits reliably, then above that it's ride to the scoot, the road and the conditions.

I know that all original speedos have the same internals but are calibrated; I think this is done by twisting the magnet inside.

Obviously the faces a different.

I have a method in mind that I could use for consistent calibration.

If anyone has a duff speedo or pile of bits I'd be interested in them.

I wonder if all these stories of "my Lambretta used to do 90, in the sixties" are due to faulty speedometers??? :D

Definitely. Since the introduction of electronic & GPS speedo's, people are realising their scooters aren't as quick as they thought they were.

I have the original speedo in my Italian GP200 and a repro speedo from Scooter Restorations in my Indian GP. Both read fast, the repro one is near to the actual speed and the needle rises proportionate to the increase in speed. The Italian one reads 75-80mph at GPS 65mph.

My series 2 speedo can indicate movement but it always lies about the speeds I'm doing.

My bog standard 150 would show 75. I reckon it was more like 55 but felt like 105 on those 8" wheels.
