My first restoration: TV175 Ser 3

As Ihave no spare wheel, brackets were my way to!

Slackened off the choke cable by 2 mm (no more adjustment left) so I think the choke plunger is fully seated down (I made sure it was free in the carb body).
Added a full gallon with oil, turned everything on and on the second kick it started beautifully.
Turned the choke off after a few mins and the engine ticked over endlessly.

Turned the ign switch to 2nd and 3rd position to check the dazzling lights.

None to be found, not one light works in any switch position.

Not quite sure where to start but I guess at the regulator, but the TV has a new 'battery loom' and no battery yet, terminals are insulated at the moment. Does this matter?
Tomorrow will be hours of fun belling all the wires through but first finding out if 6 volts are coming from the Magneto.

I think all my earths are good.
Wish me luck!

Use a battery charger as a power source; no need to run engine.

After a bit of messing I have nearly all my lights.
Found a few bullets were loose in the head lamp 'chock-block' and changed the regulator fuse to a new 8 amp

Have headlamp, speedo and rear lights but nothing from the front festoon bulb. everything bells through but not found out why no current is passing.

Started first kick (!) and all the bulbs alight bar the festoon. they dim with few revs and glow bright with a few more. Battery will sort that out.

Found out also why the gear change was so stiff with the top cowl on, the brass disc is rubbing hard on the speedo body. Speedo is a new pattern part, so not surprised...

Incidentally, the wires bell through in every switch position and the switch has no '0' (anti-clockwise) position.

Onwards and upwards. Some progress.

Don't want to disappoint but I don't think the battery will do much for your lights. They work to AC supply.

I thought the battery stopped the dimming, but if not I wonder why I should fit one?
My TV in 1967 had one.

So..does the front side light (festoon) only work with a battery connected?

Can't yet see why all the others work (switched position) but never the festoon yet the cables all bell through to earth irrespective of the switch.
Do the side lights only run with a battery and the ign switch in the anti clock position (which my switch does not have).

Do I need sides for the MoT?

Sidelight runs off the battery.

No you don't need a sidelight for MOT.

Your TV just needs headlight (dip and main), rear light and brake light for said test.

Mine lights on position 2 clockwise - I can't remember if it has a anti-clockwise position - I can check this evening.

Thank you for that confirmation.
I connected the 6v charger with the +ve to the incoming battery lead, and the -ve to the top shock damper nut for an earth and got nothing, but did not try this again, ran the engine instead to check there was actually 6 volts/some volts coming from the magneto. This looks ok. The engine started first kick!
Just read on MB site to connect the +ve to the yellow lead on the J box.

Off racing this weekend, so full focus on that now and have another go at the pesky pilot on Monday.

Running out of reasons not to start the bodywork....

What ignition switch do you use?
Is it Casa?

No, it came from Buzz as a 3 lock set, same key for all in theory.
Terrible wiring, had to solder all the bullets on the unequal gauge cables...

Tool box lock didn't fit, too large a boss to pass through the lid....

Nothing to do with Buzz, just the level of many parts I've bought from several suppliers.

My ignition does have an anti-clockwise position - as 2 but with no spark.

( not suprising really at it's the original one.)

Ah...well...but..then again...you know...

It has been forgotten and moved around a great deal as the hill climb racing season is well underway and then there was the garden 'out-house' to dig foundations for and the new garage door in a few days time.
The racing takes some time, but today I started on the stripped body panels despite racing this weekend.

Starting with the rear foot panels which I've welded but goodness knows where the thing was repeatedly parked in Rome all it's life as the dents on the side strips are 'numerous' and twisted.

Will be getting to them next week, picking the dents in and out and to filling and primer.
Leg shields will be next which are in good shape and then the glass front nose which is a bit iffy.

Will then paint and fit those in cellulose.
Biggest challenge are the side panels due to awkward rust.

Could cheat and simply send it off to a pro but that would be lazy!

Actually found some time for the TV3 this week, so thought I would do a short up-date.

The racing has begun and takes a lot of time, the old 911 much the same, but as both are now 'ok' and the weather is perfect it is time to do the body a bit.

I started with the rear floor panels as they were more dented than anything. Trying to remove a 1000 dents was tricky but I've sorted about 750 of them...
They are now sorted and the last skim of filler needs sanding before high-build filler etc and paint.

Took a look at the legshields today which are in great shape with just 5 small cracks to welds and one screw hole to braze. The small side 'panels' that match my rear boards also has 500 dents a piece...so now generally flat/straight they too are filled bar the final finishing.

The entire rest of the leg shields are perfect. Lucky or what?
It was good to rest them all on the scooter, and a great reminder why the Series 3 is so good to look at.

Next came the NS side panel. This was rusty along the bottom and stripping showed a few pin holes too, but all welded and brazed up ready for leading. I don't think filler is robust enough for this area and it has been about 30 years since I last leaded any bodywork, so that should be 'fun'.

The os panel is in fact worse in the same areas, that is still in the loft along with the new fibre glass front mug guard that came with the TV 16 years ago when I bought it.
Plan is to two-tone the side panels, old English while and deep alfa red, all DIY painted after the looming 2 week holiday.
