If you do use a relay switch you can get automotive type "mini reed relays"
Here's a link to that type, there available from many places including evilbay
http://www.ecvv.com/product/2338387.htmlYou can fit these where a standard relay sometimes won't fit

I like the look of those, about the same size as the solder in ones but with the convenience of spade connectors

Similar but the ones the Captain is referring to are quite a bit smaller

just for my understanding as I've never really got the relays thing, on the one shown in the halfords link -
12V power Power goes to 30
Your switch would be connected to 85 and 86
Either 87a or 87 would be connected to the device and the other to earth
The point being that a small current goes through the solenoid in the relay controlled by your switch and flips the 30A switch so that the main power draw is from 30 to 87(a) and not through the controlling switch.
Is that right?

Not quite.
Power from the switch goes to 86 and 85 goes to earth.
Fused power from battery goes to 30 and the item you want to switch on, ie fog light goes to the normally open (NO) contact 87.

the lambretta junction box where the blue cable goes , do I not use this any more , is it a case of just putting the blue and brown plus the spotlight wire to a block connector with the relay ?

Relays as long as you are DC are pretty strait forward. Look at the 4 pin relay in the link above. You have a coil. For example you want to replace the duck quack horn with a big air horn compressor. Remove the 2 wires from your existing horn and connect them to the 2 terminals each side of the coil. When you press your horn you should here the relay click on off. Next you take a supply fused, battery or from your brown feed from the regulator to one side of the switched relay the other side goes off to the load(compressor) with the compressor grounded it all works with little or no load on your Italian horn switch..
Spotlights can be done the same way removing the blue high beam wire from the headlight bulb holder to the coil of the relay. The other side of the relay to ground. Again the relay should click when you select high beam.
Supply a feed to one side of the relay switch the other side (Load) to your new spotlight and also back to the bulb holder that you removed at the start. The relay is switched with no load and all the heavy stuff headlight high beam and Spotlight are switched by a heavy duty relay.
Hope this is not OTT

If we are talking Browns at the lamp socket. That's is normally the feed from the rear junction box or the regulator. You will have a brown coming from the back loom then others that will go to your light switch be it a key switch or a LI type handlebar light switch. These will need to be connected or other stuff will not work. Black are generally rear light red and blue your headlight low and high beam. The horn may well be a brown feed going down the horn cast with a white back to the horn switch. This grounds the white completing the circuit.

take the power into the relay from the power going into the main on head light not from battery then your spots will only come on when you switch on full beam as per regs

Hi Patricks,
I think Nelly has it spot on. The 5 pin relay has a normally closed contact 87a that you wont use. Power from the main beam switch ( wire blue) goes to 86 and 85 to ground. When you turn on main beam 12v goes to 86 through the coil to ground and the relay picks or is energised and fused power from the battery feed usually brown sitting at contact 30 will go through the relay contacts and out through contact 87 to the spot light. The high current that the spot light requires comes from the fused 12volt brown through the relay contacts 30 and 87 and not through the high beam switch which only picks or energises the low current relay coil.

Thanks grandpa, when you say I use number 30 for the brown 12 v feed do I leave this contacted in the bulb holder or do I feed a double wire back to the bulb holder and use number 30 on the relay ? I've also tried feeding a double wire from the spotlight to the relay and then back to the bulb holder is this why the spotlight is on all the time when I've tried connecting it all up ? Many thanks patrick
