Indicator Setup (inspired by Peejay)

Postby Donnie » Tue Jun 16, 2015 7:39 pm

here viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3432&p=27913&hilit=indicator#p27913

So, Im going a different way for my Series 2, but Ive wanted to have a shot at this for some time.

I'm not using led though, im sticking with 3w festoons front and rear and wondering if it matters what sort of indicator relay is used? there seems to be 2 pin and 3 pins and I have no idea about these? Im also assuming that the relay is the same as the flasher ?

Daft questions I know, but never having to do this before it's new territory

Hi Donnie,
Yes flasher is the relay .Note if you are using conventional bulbs use WRE06 3pin relay(mechanical bi metal strip type).the third pin is for the idiot warning light. If you cannot see the indicators from a sitting position you need an idiot warning light.
I have an led in my speedo

And do I need an idiot light for the mot?

As indicators weren't a requirement when it was first registered you can tape them up for the MOT.

You'll need a friggin loud buzzer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it was a car, an 'audible warning' would be allowed, but its not, so a 'tell tale' must be fitted, or the indicators fitted so they are visible from the riding position.
Then we have Diggers option of tape, which is also perfectly acceceptable :)

I could tape them up but if Im going to the bother of fitting the system its not hard to add one more piece surely?

as for a buzzer, ordered this one, i'll see if it's enough or not i guess http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RVFM-12-v-90- ... 20fd163e39

Yep, will be more than bright enough as im running a wassell and battery. Already done a quick test or the lights im using and they're quite good.

So definitly a warning light required then if I want to avoid the tape option. :D

I have both idiot light and a flasher with a beeper built into it. The flasher is under the horn casting and I have had to put tape over it as it's very loud yes it's hard to here at speed but annoys the f.....out of my club mates normally the Vespa riders who only turn them off when they change direction.

Donnie, are you sure that you're sure? The Indian 12v indicators fitted at the factory were 18w incandescent lamps. A 3w incandescent festoon will have only a little more light than a speedo lamp, and in the daylight, you can't tell if the speedo is lit-up.

Even my LED indicators are about 3w. With good 12v DC supply, why are are going for such a small output festoon lamp? Is it the physical size of the lamp holder?

Hi Donnie,
As Knowledge remarks 3watt does not seem adequate. My indicator bulbs are 23watt.(12volt dc wassell with battery) It was the first thing I fitted for safety reasons car drivers expect to see a flashing indicator not someone flapping an arm. Indicators maybe not for purists but traffic density is much greater now than in the sixties.

yep, definitely look more than bright enough, i am assuming they are 3w bulbs to be fair as that's what the description said.

I don't know if there are higher wattage bulbs available or not, not bothered to look into it to be honest

Inspired to fit indicators to my GP for safety.
Have got all parts required (set of LED Indicators/Flasher Unit and GTS Switch ) just in process of making brackets for switch.
My question is how do I wire a single warning lamp to operate from either L/H or R/H lamps. The flasher unit I have is just feed & outllet, ideally I would like to just take a supply from which direction is activated and not cross feed to other indicators.
Any advice would be appreciated.

The 3 pin flashers tend to use the 3rd pin. My ace well had idiot lights for left and right. The single led was a bit more challenging and needed to take a feed from both sides but using a diode to stop the flow going the wrong way and lighting the other side. Look at a diode as a one way valve lets the flow through to the led warning light but not back to the other side or set of lights. You will need 2

Thanks for reply very helpful.
Do I just go to Maplins and ask for a diode or do I need to specify a size?
Sorry for such a basic question but iam only mechanical minded not electrical .
Any advice would be welcome.

Sat by the pool in sunny Crete so limited access to the inter web. Maplins should be able to help. They will want to know volts and watts. Volts 12-15V watts bugger all if they are LEDS. The diodes will have a line on them. That's the way that they flow so the end closest to the LED from one feed, and the the same from the other side. The LED will flash but stop the electricery going back down to the other side.. Makes sence to me but I'm on my 2nd bottle of red

reading this i'm glad i was able to have two led warning lights (so simple to wire up) :)
