I'd check the rivets on the flywheel boss.

I had a noise like that which I ignored. I stopped ignoring it when the flywheel and boss parted company.

I was recently asked to have a look at a mate's Jet200 that was refusing to tickover, with the owner thinking that it was probably a jetting/air leak issue. When he came over it too was making a flywheel scraping type noise, which I didn't like, so I stripped the AFR light flywheel off to check for contact and found that this had a loose magnet cover plate that was lifting and clicking when the flywheel rotated. Frustratingly, this is the second new AFR light flywheel that has done this on the same bike! The engine was one that I built for him using all new parts and the crank runs true (MEC Race) so there is no reason why this should have failed.

This bike is a regular commuter ride and rally bike, clocking up the miles and has been extremely reliable other than the flywheels. To get him back on the road I swapped it for a SIL one (lend rather than have) and the bike immediately ticked over and ran like a dream. AF have replaced the 2nd faulty light flywheel with a standard short fin SIL item and have assured the owner that failures are VERY limited.

As previous response suggested, check for flywheel and stator issues before anything else.
