Hi All,
I am thinking about getting a 185 top end kit for my sill gp, anybody recommend a reasonably price good kit. What else would I have to change to get the full benefit, not really looking for speed, more for climbing hills where I live on the Isle of Skye.
Cheers

Plenty of good small block kits out there, most of which will suit your needs. Something like a Mugello 186 or 198, GT186 or Casa 185 would do the job. You'd need to look at carb (25mm dellorto through air box?), exhaust (any decent clubman), crank (Mec) and a gearbox to suit.
The £ is still fairly strong against the Euro so you can save yourself a bit by buying from the continent. Mugello 198 small block kit only £360 from SIP;

Sounds like you would be more than happy with a decent 175 to be honest?

Might be ok, but I doubt if the piston quality is much cop

Beware of the cheapo 185 kits I bought one a few years ago and by the time I'd eventually got it cleaned up and running properly it cost nearly as much as a muggello , not sure if I was unlucky with mine but it turned out to have a slightly oval bore so after loads of work to clean up the transfer ports I had to have a rebore to 198 and a new piston

^... there are also a couple of threads running about people having issues with the iron lined alloy 185s being soft and wearing out as quickly as they are run in, which matches the experience of one of my clubmates. Other say good things so I guess these are pretty hit and miss.

A bit like some Rapidos then. Agree about the alloy kits being worn out soon after running in.

The cheapo kits are alloy with a liner, the Rapido kits are basically a cast iron kit with an alloy jacket, ie all the area including the stud holes are iron and about 10mm thick, just the outer shell that's alloy for extra cooling. The cheapo kits I've seen have had liners, about 3mm thick, that didn't appear to be inline with the transfers and no amount of work would ever get them looking as tidy as a Rapido.
175 may do the job but I've got a feeling it'll still leave you wanting more and wishing you'd have splashed out a bit more on something like an MB RT kit to begin with.

And at £360 for an rt195 it's a bit of a no-brainer to me.

An Iron liner shoved into an alloy barrel by a blind leper would be a good description of how well they are put together !!!

All the ones I've seen have a 'notch' in the liner on the lower edge of the exhaust port. By the time it's cleaned up the piston crown sits ~4mm above the exhaust port at bdc.

Hi All,
I can get my barrel bored to 175 on my GP 150. What piston would I use, would I be able to use the same con rod ,thinking will the small end fit, what other mods would I expect to have to do.
Cheers

You need to look for a 175 conversion piston.
Proper 175 Pistons have a different position of the fudge on pin because of the longer rod.
It should be possible to bore it out provided it's not already a 125 bored out to 150...
